I'll try to write my life as a mercenary here. (actual things that happened while playing the game... no stories here)

Please note : english is not my native language. My writing may sounds silly/wrong/written by a 6 years old... and I'm really sorry about that

Spoiler alert : there may be some spoiler here... so don't read my log if you don't want to be spoiled.

PART 1

It's happening... I'm still alive, I paid the bounty on my head, I'm free to go.
I bought a ship... small, simple, but at least I have one, and it's mine. I can leave that damn city where I grew up... damn bounty... better not think about the past.
I need money. Money's good when you are a mercenary... Mercenary... that sounds good to my ears... I'm a mercenary, now.

Yesterday I was in the bar, in Sapphire station, when I overheard some guy (was he called Epen, or Eben ? I think it was Eben) talking to a new young pilot. It was about some wonderful mining spot to make easy money, to start. The young pilot in front of him was very excited. Listening to every words, carefully.

Money, I need it.... to improve my ship, to pursue my adventure, my dream...

So I'm here, listening to this guy, and finally I hear the magic word : Rucker's system.

I smile, I'm done here, let's go.

I enter the cockpit of my ship, load the map. Rucker, Rucker.... mmmmhhhhh..... I carefully plot my route : Sapphire->Thuban->Pices->Pearl->Rucker.

I hope I won't encounter hostile ships....

PART 2


I'm cruising. Everything is going well. I'll be in Rucker's system in a few minutes. I like peaceful cruise... it's soothing....

On arrival, I see the main station in front of me, in the distance. First time coming in this system. I'm a little nervous.
Let's go and dock to refuel and learn more informations.

Suddenly, a warning sound ! I look at the radar.. what the.... red ships ! One... two.... three... they get out of hyperspace, one after another !
Not good, not good... I head to the station, maximum speed. If they notice me, it'll be the end of my journey.

Damn ! The dreaded alarm shows up on my HUD : incoming missile !

I'm dead.

I'm trying to chill... keeping my cool. Think. Fast. I'm not used to combat. Not at all...

I spam some countermeasures... the missile fly by me... it was so close... probably my speed outran the missile ? or I got very lucky ?

I reach the station, rush in way too fast, and dock. Control tower is yelling at me about my overspeed approach, but I don't care.

I'm alive.

The hostiles are gathering and waiting for me outside the station.
This was supposed to be mining paradise they said... easy money they said....

PART 3


I was too eager. Money, new places, adventures ! It's gonna kill me one day.
I must find a way to get out of this station, and do my mining business. I won't let those damn hostiles ruin my plans.

I leave my ship, and head to the 'crew for hire' place in the station.
I need to find a Science Ops. It can help you find good asteroids and mine faster. And honestly, I need to talk to let the stress out.

Half an hour later and no one wants to work with me. I have no money, they don't know me. Damn... I can't blame them.
I'm about to let go when I see a young guy reading a chart. After some talking, I know his name is Vlad and he's a new, quite unexperimented, Science op looking for his second job.

After much talking, he accept the fact that I don't have much money now but is OK to be paid an extra after the first trip to the roid belt.
Of course, I don't tell him about my encounter. Better if he's not knowing the truth now...

We return to my ship and look up the nav map. Vlad thinks we should jump a few sectors away, to a nice roid belt.

It's a good plan but I'm wondering : how are we gonna leave the station without being shot ? A solution slowly comes into my head !

I'll set the nav computer to be ready to jump to the roid belt, and I'll jump right after leaving the space station ! That is, if those hostiles don't shoot us before we can jump...

I look up my radar, see the hostile, but don't say a word. I try to be as cool as usual. Even joking with Vlad. I request departure from the station; it is granted at gate 5.

Ho god... Not that gate... hostiles are just in front of it... no way I can get out and jump before getting killed. Odds are not with me today...

Instead, I head for gate 2.

Everything happens in a blink.
I'm in front of gate 2, motors full speed. As soon as the ship exit the station, I see the hostiles going for me.

I hit the fulcrum drive button. *HYPERSPACE JUMP* A few seconds later, we are near the asteroid belt. Alone. No ships around.

We are safe, for now...

Vlad must be thinking I'm a crazy pilot. Poor guy, he don't even know we just rode with death a moment earlier...

Vlad is a good guy. His job is to read/write charts, and that's what he did when we were departing... he was so busy... no time to look at the window

PART 4


Mining is something very demanding... Being so focused for long hours... only a few meters away from huge chunks of stone !
A few seconds of not paying attention, and I'm in serious trouble, or dead.

Anyway, I'm doing mostly well. Did my first rotation with a cargo full of platinum. I paid Vlad his extra and we are back at mining again. But I'm wasting time, because I have to dump all the low value stuff (metal mostly) to keep only platinum. So much time wasted.
If I keep mining like that, I won't get lots of money anytime soon !

Fortunately, Vlad -good guy Vlad- told me about a Platinum mining beam. This thing is wonderful and I'll save so much time mining only platinum.

But I need to get one and it's pretty expensive, and available only in a somewhat dangerous system : PEARL.

I need it... Let's do a few more rotations, a few more $$$, and we'll head to PORT OASIS...

Some miners "seed" each cargo bay with one unit of whatever mineral they want to mine. Also, keep in mind that the tractor beam mines from the top down ... so, I usually jettison from the bottom. When the bottom bay begins filling up with the chosen mineral, I jettison the one above (unless it, too, holds the chosen metal). Up and up. That way, I can fill all bays faster without purchasing a particular tractor beam.


P.S. "Jettison" is the wrong word. I dump the unwanted stuff. You jettison with the "J" button ... and all your cargo is dumped at once (though you can pick it back up, 'cause it's bundled right behind you). To dump just one bay, double click on the bay in question (that way, though, you can't recover what you dumped).

Ty Marvin for those advices and for correcting my spelling.

Indeed since I started mining I used the seeding tips to keep only the platinum. I did it that way : mine, when interesting mats full : dump metal slot until platinum appears. Then I keep filling it to 25.

Actually my logs are a little behind than my current situation in game. I'll try to keep it up to date. (The platinum tractor beam was a wonderful way to speed money income with mining).

I'll edit my log to change "jettison" to "dump", you are right. Because I never jettison when mining, I just dumped the useless slot

PART 5

A lot happened lately.

First, Vlad left my ship. He refused to go to PEARL with me. Too dangerous, he said. I promised lots of money... but still, no.
I was a little upset because Vlad did a great job, and gave me some good advices... But him leaving had me started wondering if I should really go to PEARL.
This platinum mining beam sounds so cool. Too cool not to have one ! I have enough money now, my mind is set.

The trip to PEARL was pretty easy, and fast : only one gate away. Upon arrival, some hostiles shows up on my radar. Far enough for now. I quickly head to PORT OASIS.
I dock, open the trading list. Ho man ! so much goodies ! But look at those prices ! They even have a Terrain Walker for 7 mil ! Out of my reach, for now...

I quickly buy the platinum mining beam and head back to RUCKER while being under fire from those hostiles I saw earlier. It was close. But I have my precious mining beam now.

And then, from this day, I spent days mining platinum and selling it. Money accumulated again.

After some research and talking, I bought a license at PORT OASIS. It's not cheap, but have great benefits. I'm protected from hostiles while inside the station, and have 25% on sales.
Now I could get into the dangerous but lucrative part : I started buying Fulcrum torpedoes and selling them. Good cash income, but lots of risk.
Unfortunately, my ship's cargo bay is now a very interesting target for those hostiles ships.

And indeed, the trips back and forth, buying and selling, looked like a mice and cat game. Pretty time consuming and inefficient.

Enough is enough. I was tired of hiding. I needed to show them I would fight back and they should not mess with me !

Man, was I too confident.

I engaged the fight, and quickly got overwhelmed. My HUL badly damaged. Next missile and I would have blown up.

And then I saw something crazy : a ship just appeared from nowhere and started destroying ships after ships. The guy was so good. After a while, the others started to flee, jumping in hyperspace.

I looked up on my radar : a pilot named IRON MAN just saved my life.........
