I successfully completed the last 2 missions involving capital ships in Cerulean. Thanks to helpful advice from the veterans, I have gained a reasonable amount of combat skill. I have a Mammoth with some good load outs. However, the next I.M.G. quests take place in the Sierra system, which sounds
pretty difficult. Should I get my feet wet by undertaking military contracts before going there?

I haven't been to the Sierra warzone so I can't speak to it, but Sierra system isn't so bad and Agate Hub and Agate is decent but what the station in the Asteroids field in Agate - the Guild and Rebels like to start coming in when you dock - but you can handle them if you don't let too many accumulate.
Agate is a Fair system.

Hi.

Combat is a bit harder in Sierra. Practicing in easier areas (Olympus, Talison WZ) is a good thing to do if you haven't already.
(Since you already did contracts in Cerulean, you might be up to speed regarding combat already)
Boosting up your ships equipment if needed as well.
Hire a crew (Engineer and Weapons Ops) and train them to 100%.

Other than that, just jump in and try it. (Save often)
You can also join MP and have others to help you out.

Good Luck!

MP is a good place to find help. IM is almost always around on Sunday between noon and 2pm Pacific time. Yesterday would've been great ... we were practicing in Aries on the G1 server and managed to put the star system in our favor. (We picked up a couple new guys who must've trained with some elite squad elsewhere.)
