Hillbilly discovers padlock and TrackIR

Post by SamKillitson »

Asks questions about padlock and camera controls...

Specifically the padlock view as I just discovered it.
It seems like it just floats about with very little control with mouse but I know there must be some trick to it.
It could be a game changer for me because I have hit the wall as far as looking through a windshield goes.

Maybe a modifier key to move it with the mouse?
I'm playing first person mostly with mousepoint and no cockpit, just hud.
Do I need 3 hands?

Thanks

The padlock view should stick to the target ship. This allows you to move around without losing track of your target. So if you fly along side the target the padlock view will be looking at the inside of the side of your ship, as you turn towards the target the view of your ship will swing round until the target is at the centre of your HUD.

You don't alter padlock view with your mouse - you do it by turning your ship.

Ahh, ok so it only works when you have another ship targeted.
Thanks Dave, let me take a look at this.

You guys keep the game a secret for years and then keep the best feature of the game secret after a guy starts playing it.
What am I going to do with you all?

I had the cockpit off was the reason it was so discombobulating at first. I had no perspective to get the ship back righted and no idea what I was looking at once the hud left my frontal view.

Someone needs to include this in their guides for new players. Now I have to completely learn how to fly again.

IIRC, that's how padlock view has worked since at least Combat Flight Simulator ... and it's why I never use it. It gives me vertigo.

Yes Sir it is pretty trippy and I was lost as a ball in the high weeds till I remembered I turned the cockpit off. Im slightly less lost now but it will take a ton of getting used to and I assume its best used situationally.
Evochron is my first ever flight sim. When I had previously saw the padlock I was thinking I dunno what this is and never thought of it again.

One more question.

If I use trackIR will I get a similar visual as padlock but locked to the center gunsight? Or will it be more like using home and pageup? I hope its not the latter. In other words can I look all around in an orbital fashion or is it just a toggle for up, down, left and right?

- your call but on SeeJay's site there's the Hints&Tips Guide. It does contain some spoilers but they are clearly labelled so you can avoid them. It also contains the distilled wisdom of the community and Vice amassed over several years. :D

 Not quite as good as some other distilled stuff, but pretty good nonetheless.
