Three years too late

Post by oxo »

Hello Vice,
Hello fellow players,

yesterday I found this gem of games while browsing games in Steam. I found this website and the demo. Thank you very much for letting us try before buy!

I've played about 30 minutes the tutorial and I KNEW this game is awesome!

Why didn't I find this game three years ago? I have no clue. Of course I've played EVE a lot, but PvP isn't my cup of tea, but this very game makes my dreams come true.

Thank you very much for developing that great game, I'm new, and today I've bought this on Steam, and hell it is wonderful. I've died already by F2 thru an asteroid, great learning by pain. No warning, just plain dead. Of course with three cargo bays full of materials ;-)

I LOVE IT! That's the way we have to learn to do it right. So I'm reading now, how to prevent my next death.

There is so much to read, so much to learn, but unfortunately it seems, I'm three years too late. But no worries, I will stay and I pay close attention to Vice, the "Godfather of programming skills".

I'm so impressed this great game is developed by a single man, from my point of view he is close to Notch with his Minecraft.

Thank you very much, that you didn't abandon this game, it seems there are still bugfixes and updates.

I'm late, but not too late, I still enjoy the exploration and learning (and how I have to learn this game).

Thank you!

 I learned to quick-save (Alt F9) after filling my cargo bays back when, if you weren't careful when lifting off from a planet, you crashed.

Indeed.

You're not too late - I just found the game... I want to say... five days ago?
I don't know. I lose track of time and what-not.
It's all pretty inconsequential when you rarely go anywhere or meet people with fixed schedules. XD
The truth is often stupid. <_<

Hi Oxo,

You are not too late in any way. After I played this game for many, many, many hours, I looked for other games like it, and found none that equal it. It is so excellent. I keep coming back to it. Though it was first released a few years ago, Vice has made a number of outstanding updates to the game, which has prevented the game from "aging" like other games. I quietly hope that to keep this game out there and talked about, and to put it in the spotlight again, Vice eventually makes another sequel and makes a fortune (I even sent a feature request), but I know that game development and support can be extremely time consuming and sometimes deeply frustrating, so I won't push. Before that time, I plan to put lots of my available gaming time into Evochron Mercenaries. Welcome and enjoy. :)

Vice deserves a fortune for what he's created and the amount of time, effort and $$$ that he's spent so far. :P

Interestingly enough, I lurk on these forums pretty frequently, and love all of the same things you all do. Yet I've never been able to get into the game very deeply. I haven't been able to master the combat (though I admit I have not spent the time needed to gain the skill), nor been able to effectively make money in early game (again - haven't spent the proper amount of time). Yet despite my own shortcomings, this is a game that has never left my hard drive, mainly because I love the community and think the feature list is easily the most impressive among the genre.

Glad to see new folks come around and voice their appreciation, it inspires me to dust off my joystick when I go home and try and get back into it.

Hi Minuteman,

In order to do well at combat, you need to buy a good ship, so the making money part is essential. There are lots of hints and tips in the section on making money quick starting at page 289 in this guide: http://www.evochron2.junholt.se/guides/ ... ct2014.pdf. One thing I love about this game, though, is that combat is there if you want it; you can warp away from a fight if it comes to you when you don't want it or aren't ready for it. I spend most of my time exploring, sight-seeing uncharted planets, though for that too making money early is a must, for getting a decent ship with a good (mantis) drive. If getting money in Evochron is keeping you from getting into the game, by all means please give that guide a try. There's good info in it for combat and everything else in the game too.

Buy or make a Metal Vapor laser with max settings and a Fusion Cannon with max settings. And get a Engineer, Weapons officer, and Sci Officer. at 100% ability & loyalty. This will allow you to have max firing time and range with your guns. As you get a little experience then in combat try to increase your Energy to +1 or maybe +2 (but be careful) to get even more firing time.
Try to use inertial mode when fighting and switch to IDS when you mush turn and afterburn into position then switch back to Inertial - to help avoid missiles.
Learn to "fly" you ship as best as you can. That's my weakness - not beaing able to adequately use Roll along with Pitch and Turn to fly properly. I guess I just don't have the brain power and agility at my age. I can generally get by but I'm just not happy that I can't "fly" properly.
And remember that if your energy is getting low then shoot with your Cannon only instead of both guns. The cannon alone can be almost as good as using both guns and you can fire the cannon much longer than you can both guns.
maybe use both to get some damage and then switch to Cannon fo finish him off.
