EM Problem on inv screen when hovering over items

Post by akuma92802 »

I just upgraded my motherboard/cpu, and re-installed EM. everything works perfectly fine, except on inventory screen, when an item is to be displayed (i.e. a missile when you hover with the mouse over it's name), the games lags for 1-2 seconds.... over any and each item that is displayed, but no problem with just text like news, system info, navigation screen... just thoses... and i cannot sell any item in my cargo bay, although i can buy items or jettison my cargo while in space.

EM Problem on inv screen when hovering over items

Hello and welcome. Something in your upgrade may be impacting the read/write performance of your system. When the game retrieves data about an inventory item, it loads mesh and text content from the required data file(s). If your system is slow at returning this data for some reason, you may encounter a pause during that read operation. This is usually fixable though as most hard drives themselves offer fast enough performance for rapid loading of a few lines of text, even slow hard drives. So there is likely something else running on your system that is interfering with these read operations, slowing the loading performance in the game.

Check for any security programs you may have running and make sure they are not interfering with the game (or your hard drive's performance in general for that matter). The game could be getting interfered with or performance hindered somewhere else along the line, but this is the most likely cause, so I'd suggest starting there first.

I did notice that my secondary hd is being slower than normal, main one maybe alittle slower than before as well... games all take longer to load, although they run better once loaded. I will look into how I can fix that and will give news.

Btw, great game! I have been looking for something like this for a long time... tried EM demo, bought it the very next day! :)

That could be very hard to diagnose online like this.
I can only suggest a couple of things.
I assume your Drives are Sata II or Sata III.
Assuming that make sure you have the bios set to ahci and not ide mode or you sure will have I/O issues with your drives.
And if you have an SSD you must have AHCI enabled for proper functioning of the SSD.
Make sure noting is going on like defragging or windows updating or virus scanning in the background.

Did you do a new install of windows? You can't just take your old drives with Windows on them and hok them up to a new motherboard and expect Windows to run properly.
Windows is just not smart enough to recognize a whole new set of hardware from whatit was installed on.
I'm even skeptical of doing a reinstall of Windows on tip of itself with a new motherboard and having that work 100% correctly. I'd reinstall Windows from scratch - as painful as that is.

If you replaced with a new but same model motherboard and just a better CPU then you would most likelt be ok but not if it's a totally different motherboard and cpu.

I've been out of the tech business so long that's about the only advice I can offer.

A friend ofmine that is a tech (and gave me the new mb/cpu) told me about the same thing as Paul. You're not so out of it. :) My HD is recent (bought last year) but not sure is SATA 2 or 3. It is a new windows install, but y friend suggested to re-do it but re-format, since I often install/uninstall stuff and my hd was probably fragmented to hell.Just done formatting and re-installing windows, updated Windows and video drivers, and about to try Evochron again. Will keep you guys updated.

Well, the problem remains even after a full reformat/reinstall of windows, although I can sell items now. At least its still playable, I just have to go slow around the inventory screen. Doesnt affect anything else. It also desn't seem to happen with other games... maybe It's a driver or something. I will also run a diagnostic on my hd just in case.

I'm playing on an old Dell Precision M65 laptop (circa 2004 or so and used off ebay on top of that). I have some lag problems - I only get about 13-16 fps in general flying around and if a plant is in my front view close by it drops to 5fps. I often have lag mousr clicking or pressing keys at time but I have noticed any problems really with mousing over items and their thumbnals and descriptions popping up - and I'm sure my drive is something like and old sata I 5400 rpm drive.

I suggest you go into the video properties (you haven't said I don't think if it's nvidia or AMD/ATI or onboard or what CPU you are using - mine is a intel core duo 1.86mhz) and make a note of the 3D settings and everything and email them to Vice to take a look at. Also take look in Device Manager at your HDD drive properties and write down that info and post or email it to Vice as well as your EM settings in options.

If you hardware is anything equal ot greater than mine then you shouldn't have an major playing issues. It sounds like you have something with a configuration problems or possibly you have a HDD problem in the making. Also look in Event Viewer and see if you see any Warning or Errors under Applications or System.
Unfortunately I can't think of what or where you could get any system or HDD diagnostics. I guess you could try to google and see if you come up with diags but be careful what you download. Maybe your tech friend has some to test your HDD performance. You could run the Error-checking in C: properties and see if that detects any errors.
I assume your HDD had to be formated NTFS and not FAT32 ?

Sorry, I should have mentionned my system spec before. but my fps is good, the lag (about .5 to 1 second) is only when I hover the mouse over over items when it load the text/mesh. I used to play Em on a amd Phenom 2 X3 720BE (2.8 Ghz), 4 Gig Ram, recent Western Digital 500 gig hd and a ATi HD 6670 with 1 Gig DDR5 mem. EM worked perfectly. I upgraded my MB/CPU/RAM to a Intel Core2Quad Q6600 2.4 Ghz, 8 Gig ram. Hd and video card are the same. HD is set as AHCI, formatted in NTSF. The game runs perfectly, even in lareg fights with multiple enemies, no stutter or fps drop. The problem is only in the inventory screen as described. I do have the latest Video card drivers and updated windows ( Using Win7 Family Premium 64 bits). My guess is maybe some windows drivers for that hd doesn't work as well with the hd controller on that MB (Intel DQ965GF). Other games on the computer work flawlessly.

You could need updated HDD controller drivers. Look in device manager and get the info and then try to find them online or google then or check the motherboard makers web site -most usually have updated drivers on their support page.
