Okay, so apparently I did something really stupid and bought a license at a station in the middle of the "let's shoot the player-controlled ship" club. It took me three reloads just to get a situation that gave me enough time to jump back to the jump gate and get the hell out of Dodge.
Here's the question: is there any way to quickly improve one's reputation (in single-player) at least to the point where I don't get mobbed by a dozen (not making that up) massive hostile ships constantly? I'd hate for the $3M+ I spent on the license to be a wasted expense. (The last couple of times I was in the system, the hostility was mild. Otherwise I wouldn't have bothered.)

No, afraid not. And the more hostle the system (Moderate, Hostile) the harder it is to improve them. From post: 174210, Topic: tid=11714, author=AcePalarum wrote:Okay, so apparently I did something really stupid and bought a license at a station in the middle of the "let's shoot the player-controlled ship" club. For instance:
In Fair systems when you do Combat contracts you will get 3 to 4 hostiles per Navpoint in the contract if it's a multi-waypoint contract.
In Moderate and Hostile systems it jumps up to 10+ hostile per waypoint - which for me as a mediokre pilot is very hard to cope with and hiring AI Wingmen to help you is VERY expensive, especially when you consider you have to do (I don't know how many - never tried counting them) 10's to 100's of contracts to turn a system from Fair to Good. I've converted about 5 or 6 systems from Fair to Good so far.
Olympus, Cerulean, Atlas (I think it was Fair), Talison, Orion, Sirius.
I've done some contracts in Rigel but only a few because of the 10+ hostiles per contract per waypoint.
As far as buying a Station License in the middle of a Hostile system, there is nothing wrong with that. I did the same in Pearl in the beginning, then you buy there and take and sell them at Hidden Pearl planet to make tons of money.
The trick I use is and suggest is jump to an empty sector of space that is within Jump range of your Drive (if a Mantis it's 10 sectors) where they are no Hostiles present and stop and set the current location as a Navpoint them click Add to Maplog so you will always have that as a jump point to call up. Then (for example) when I'm at Hidden Pearl I will call up that waypoint from the Maplog and autopilot to it and stop when I get there. Then I will set my Pitch to 0 and Heading to 180 and then open the Nav Console and make Port Oasis (where I have the station license) my current navpoint and set my speed to 700 or so and switch to Inertial and then Jump and the Jump will take me right into Port Oasis and Doc me and I'm all safe and cozy.
Then when you are ready to leave, close the Trade Console to undock and turn your ship (if needed) to face the exit and open the Nav Console and select your Saved Maplog entry for the waypoint you created out in the empty sector and press Jump - and you will jump out of the station and to your saved waypoint and most likes a relatively safe area.
That way you can avoid being ganged up on by Hostiles while you are trying to earn a living.
If you buy a Build Constructor you can also build your own Trade Stations in a empty area (but preferably within 2 sectors of a planet or asteroid field for finance/trade purposes) and have another source for buying products to sell elsewhere and with a free station license.
Good luck.

Bit of a spoiler . . .
'Enter' the station as soon as you dock (it's one of the options shown top left after you've docked) and you're safe until you leave it again.
When you're 'inside' the station you have access to the shipyard and the weapon lab. You can also choose your cargo in peace. As soon as you leave exit the station switch to the nav map and either

- choose the gate you want to escape through or
- choose the station you wan to trade at in system or
- choose a sector away from stations or planets
[/list=1]and then jump from inside the station
Once you get the hang of it you can trade in a hostile system (like Pearl) without the reds actually being able to catch up with you.

I did not know you could safely jump from inside a trade station. (Jumping into one I've almost got the hang of.)
Thanks for the advice, I feel a lot more sanguine about my plans for that station license now.

If you use the Enter Station option in the docked menu. It will make the hostile AI no longer track you. Do your business and wait for a few minutes. The reds should move off far enough away from the dock to give you a bit of breathing room.
