Odd one tonight, went to use my MP profile and after renaming it to have clan tags it became a single player profile only. Which prevented me joining my server.
So I created a new profile with the tags [RTO] and soon as I connected I was automatic given the same quest that another player who was in the server was undertaking.
Then when they completed I got paid, so I went to get a contract and they were also given the same contract notifications and got paid when I completed the contract.
The other player had different clan tags.
Server is Win2008 64 bit with latest EM Server (2D).
Hosting server is Retroverse.com.au

As long as you are in the same sector, all pilots in that sector are in on the contract.
If you were in different sectors, it's very odd indeed.

Oh ok, hmmmm even though other players have different tags all players in the sector get the same contract given regardless?
ie: They were 10% into the contract, I connected to the server and i was 10% into the current contract the other player was working on.

Yes, all players in the sector gets the contract regardless of clan tags.
But not if you have docked and "entered" the station or is in pause menu (ESC).
You must also be in the sector when the contract is taken to be included. (At least that how it worked before).
It's weird that you also had 10% into a contract that was already started before you joined.
That one is for Vice I guess.

It's because there can only be one contract active in a sector. Therefore if you want to do group contracts everyone has to be incorporated automatically - some of the multi-WP combat contracts are much more fun/possible when in a group!
One consequence is that if a player takes a contract in the sector and then takes a coffee break before completing it blocks that sector for everyone - considered to be bad manners!
If you get killed during a multiplayer contract and respawn before it finishes you can rejoin the contract (if you can find the mob!

Sounds like normal operation. Depending on contract/mission parameters and who is flight lead, you can join in on a contract in progress and be synched into it (particularly multi-waypoint missions). The multiplayer section in the instructions provides additional information on the various link and control systems for coop contracts.

Ok, just seemed odd and very out of place to just be automaticly included in a contract regardless of what you are doing or when you join.
Next time I will read the manual more sorry about that.

[EM 2.878 STEAM] Multiplayer All Players Get Given Same Contract
It was set up this way for several reasons, some player requested, others design and functionality related. Here are some excerpts from past discussion on it that provide some of the reasoning behind the 'link in by location' approach:
- It was intentionally set up this way for several reasons (three main ones anyway). One was to avoid having to shard players into separate 'instances' away from the game's universe while contracts were going on. Another was to build risk into the equation so players would have to enforce the territories where they were playing to avoid others coming in to 'piggy-back' on their success or to hinder their success by trying to interrupt their contracts. Lastly, it was set up this way to avoid adding another step to the rather complex learning curve for the game. Specifically, it was done to help noob's from having to take another step just to link in to a contract they wanted to be part of (so they wouldn't have to remember to do so or have to press required keys/activate certain console options). All they would have to worry about is showing up with their friends at the location they wanted to play in.
...you do not have to accept a contract link, if you do not want to participate. While the auto-link (for sector only) is in place for a few particular reasons, you do not have to retain that link. Just click on 'Cancel Contract' before the waypoint is activated and you will be removed from the contract without impacting the other players who are linked in. That way, if you want to stay out of it and keep doing your original activity or leave the sector, you can.

Ok that makes sense... I was concerned that if I cancelled the contract it would cancel it for everyone.

Ditto - I'd either never known or forgotten! From post: 172812, Topic: tid=11614, author=Marvin wrote:Please leave it open. Some of us need to be reminded occasionally that we can opt out of a contract (unless we're at the top of the list) without borking it for everyone else.
