Which Technical Guide?

Post by -Pv- »

In various links here and elsewhere I cannot tell which version of the Technical Guide and Hints and Tips is the latest.

All I have to go on is the file names and document titles:
The_Authorised_Evochron_Mercenaries_Technical_Manual_(3rd_revised_and_extended_edition)_V3.2.pdf
The Authorised Evochron Mercenaries' Technical Manual V3.2

VS

EvochronMercenariesTechnicalManual(ExpansionEdition)OctRevision.pdf
... Which has in the title:
"... Expansion Edition revised November 2013

Which is latest and greatest?

Also, the current version of the hints and tips is confusing:
A_Book_of_Hints_and_Tips_Version_05_integrated.pdf
EVOCHRON MERCENARY: A BOOK OF HINTS AND TIPS
compiled by DaveK (callsign Incoming) from contributions on the forum - V05

VS

EvochronMercenaryH+TG-ExpansionEditionOctoberRevision.pdf
EVOCHRON MERCENARY:A BOOK OF HINTS AND TIPS
compiled by DaveK (callsign Incoming)
from contributions on the forum-EXPANSION EDITION
NOV 2013

Which is latest?

Which Technical Guide?

The latest guides should be the ones you find here: http://www.evochron2.junholt.se/ in the Guide Section.
\"Nothing is impossible, it only takes a bit longer!\"
\"We are not retreating, we are advancing in another direction!\"

Sorry about that. I don't bother editing previous threads and posts. The latest version is always the on on SeeJay's site. As a soon as a new version is created it replaces the older one on his site and I publicise its existence.

:)

ps - it's the same thing with the Short Story Collection :D

Which Technical Guide?

I don't expect links scattered around the web to be current. It helps though if the file names or the documents themselves have some consistent versioning in them.
Web sites come and go too and contents get copied all over the place.
When documents contain versions, that's only helpful if all the related documents contain versions in the same format. If dates, all of them use dates, if numbers, all of them numbers.

When I release freeware, I try to stick with my original format, even if I don't like my original format so all the people following my iterations know what they are getting. Unique file names go a long way to identify unique documents, but do not identify versions/updates very well.
mydoc.doc mysuperupdateddoc.doc my_super_super_extravaganza_special.doc my_super_updated_butnot_special(final).doc my_final(updated).doc

Thanks for your imaginative and voluminous contributions.

Ahhh well . . .

If I could predict where the Guides/Manuals are going to go I guess I could standardise on a naming system. Within a series of game upgrades there are 'items of particular interest' that appear in the forum (usually triggered by new players who appear without preconceptions or knowledge - like your query). I try to keep a sensible naming system going. But Vice decided to create a major (major major major) update to the game and release it for free so everyone could continue to play the same game version regardless of their financial resources . . . As a result I had to (had to??? :D ) update the Hints&Tips Guide (and the Mercenary Technical Guide) to incorporate (just as examples) the new combat implications, the Terrain Walkers, the Weapon Lab plus a whole raft of other changes. Since the H&T's Guide is the collation of the wisdom of the community I thought that calling it the 'Expansion Edition' with a date would clarify where it fits into the sequence of versions. But that of course assumed that everyone looking at it shared a common background.:o

Basically I'm not the one controlling where the updates lead - I'm one of the the ones trying to keep track of what the (mainly newbie) players want/need to find out. I produce a new version when there is enough new material to justify one (lots of small queries or a few major ones) and publicise it's launch. SeeJay (bless him) hosts the community's mods/guides/stories/quests/everything else. ;) . . . So, if you're unsure where to find the the latest version of whatever the community has created and shared, head for SeeJay's site and you'll find it there. If you're still unsure, U2U the person creating whatever it is that you're interested in and you'll get a quick response (assuming they're still active)

Viper created a thread that listed all the mods etc but RL got in the way and he had to withdraw. I've tried to maintain his thread but the rate of development of mods/guides/vids/tutorials etc makes it very difficult to keep it up to date - the forum wasn't designed to maintain a catalogue of mods/tutorials etc. I'm working on creating a coffee table book/catalogue of what's available (so you can peruse upgrades for your ship over a relaxing coffee) but creating the graphics (what HUD's/ships etc actually look like) is quite a challenge so it's still in the development stage.

To hit the nitty gritty . . . SeeJay's site has the latest versions of main stuff (tutorials/mods/guides/quest/utilities etc) hosted. If it's not there U2U the creator (of the mod etc).

You can even U2U or email the creator of the game!!! . . . Vice is (to my knowledge) is unique - sole developer and his record for responding to a query on the forum is under five minutes :P

:)

ps welcome to the game and the community :P

In my experience, Vice responds best to an e-mail query, rather than an u2u format - starwraith3dgames > contact is probably one of the better routings.
