I'm not sure this is an issue or even this subforum is the right place but I post it anyway, just in case.
When in 'fly-by-mouse' control mode, you need to hold your ALT key down to hover with the mouse pointer through the screen to access many options, ok?
But when a 'pop-up' window shows up (say the inventory screen) you now see the pointer so you can access the options for that window and you just don't need to hold any keys down.
So why if you already have your pointer on screen can't you access the chat window options? You still need to hold ALT down in this case. You already have your pointer right in the screen and are not controlling the ship with your mouse, you should be able to reach that window seamlessly IMO...

Basically the message log is its own system separately dependent on the flight/pointer mode. It might be possible link it together with the console status, I'll need to review the potential ramifications of doing so though as when changes like this have been made in the past, they have sometimes negatively impacted the way other players use the game.
In the meantime, if you'd like to activate point controls for the message log with or without a console open, press both Alt keys simultaneously. You'll hear a beep indicating that the mode has been activated. Press them again to deactivate the point mode. That system is separate from other mouse point/flight modes and can be used independently with the message log controls regardless of console or flight status.

Ok, it was just a comment, don't want to mess anything. I was thinking perhaps simulating that the alt key was already pressed was the solution or similar (if this were an issue in the first place). Thanks for your answer. Now back to play this great game...
