POI Database

Post by picommander »

I'm currently on my way back "home" from an extended deep space trip. As a side effect I've got over 100 Million credits and 27 POIs from deep space trading (should be 30 at least when I'm back). As soon as I'm back I'll start to explore these points of interest and expect to find some uncharted systems and/or black holes. What I'm missing is a way to check out if some of these POIs are already known. Something like SeeJay's Universe map but with the option to search for or synchronize the coordinates. Otherwise I'm pretty sure that some or even most of them are already listed in his map. I assume such a possibility doesn't exist yet.

What do you think, would you appreciate such a database? Optimum would be of course if SeeJay could modify his map to allow such a search for coordinates, but that's probably not that easy and a lot of work. Otherwise I would try to build one by myself but I've no experience with databases so that it also wouldn't be quite easy. Before I start I'd like to hear about some common demand (from at least 3 players). Otherwise my own simple text file will do for me.

For Evometrics, I think perhaps a coordinate readout*, set to the location of your cursor, would do just as well ... that and a more comprehensive zoom function.

* Similar to the one in SeeJay's Planetfinder: http://evochron2.junholt.se/main/planetsearch3.htm

I don't think so. What I have in mind is a method where I can type in 3 coordinates like a typical POI: 970,-46,-219 for SX,SY,SZ which would tell me then if these coordinates are known or not. Wouldn't hurt if it also tell me what exactly is there in case it's already known. Could you tell me that in the example above and if so what am I missing here?

Also mind the SY -46 coordinate. I'm not sure if it's possible to find such planets with the trilateration tool as the planet finder only seems to know SX and SZ coordinates and apparently assumes all uncharted planets on the SY 0 plane (which you know isn't the case).

 The Planet Finder gives you very accurate SX and SZ coordinates ... from there you simply travel straight up and/or straight down to find the star system.

I'm afraid you don't understand. I don't want to find stars, I want to organize my POIs. I already HAVE the coordinates, I don't need to find something. I just want to know if it's worth to visit these POIs (means if they show something new, a planet or whatever, or if they are already known). I'd also like to plan an optimized route for all my 30+ POIs across the evoverse which would include some kind of 3D-pathfinder. It would be perfect if I also could include all given coordinates that I got from AI pilots for containers in such a route, which meanwhile are also 30+, to prevent redundant trips. In short, I'm thinking about a database where we could share and search planets and other objects but not as it is now, based on system/planet names, rather than based on coordinates. Even a table of rough POIs would be interesting, mainly to know if such a point is worth a further investigation or not.

 It would. And SeeJay could probably create the shell for your data base. The trick is in gathering all the coordinates of known planets and adding them to the shell.

Gosh! This thread could have been a lot shorter with the simple answer
"Such a solution already exists:"

EM2UD in 3 versions (xls, ods, sql) on SeeJay's page under CALCULATORS / DB.

Once explored I guess I should send my data to SeeJay?
Or is there some sort of html form to transfer the data directly to the "official" database(s)?

The only downside to using EM2UD files is they aren't as up to date as the evometrics db.

My thoughts are the ideal solution is for the evometrics searching front-end to be updated to allow;

1. searching by sectors and
2. for the search window to also display the SX SY & SZ values of objects found.

Main reasons for 1. is it would be handy, and for 2. is to be able to differentiate between two objects with the same name but in different locations (which can happen btw search for the planet D140 in evometrics, one is in the Deneb system the other is in the O867 system).

Aside from that I suspect the EM2UD files are generated from the evometrics database anyway (if they're not they could be), but having more search options available directly from evometrics would save SeeJay needing to do that additional step (especially as SeeJay updates the db manually). - I suppose that last bit answers you're last couple of queries, i.e. there isn't an html form, so you'd need to send them to him - there is however a "System Form" (xls, ods) you can download from his site (at the bottom of the same page as the EM2UD files).

Yes, thank you very much. That hits the nail, though right now I'm basically looking for a fast and reliable way to match my current POIs and other found/bought coordinates with those of existing databases. Right now that's just too cumbersome: Imagine about 65 (POIs and containers) coordinates to find in SeeJay's starmap. While not impossible that would be a nightmare.

I'm eager to hear what SeeJay would think about these ideas or if he probably come up with an even better one...

The EMUD is extracted from the DB used for Evometrics.
I extract a new version when pilots ask me to, so if there is a need for an updated version, just let me know.

I created the DB used by Evometrics and a friend of mine (MapMan) created the Evometrics.
He is very busy with RL work and travel a lot, but he told me that he is working on a new version of Evometrics
in his hotel room LOL!;)

When (No ETA on that) it's finished, there will be a lot of new and improved features.
Me and others have pitched in with ideas and he will do his best to implement them.
I even wanted to be able to chose what DB to connect with. That way we can use it for other games as well.

The best solution for you picommander at the moment would be to use a spreadsheet I think. Use the Filter function to display what you need at any given moment.
The Filters are active in the EMUD available from my site. The Search (Find & Replace) function might come in handy as well.
