Hi Guys,
I'm a bit of a newbie with this game, and I never figured out how to jump to a new system. I planned a visit to Earth and nearby systems, so I tried to just set off into the wild blue (well, black) yonder and see where I ended up. Basically, I ended up totally lost and am now in the middle of nowhere (Just left of back of beyond) and can't find my way back to any place where there is a station or planet showing on the map.
I never really figured out navigation, so I don't know if I can just enter coordinates into the nav display, but anything I tried (including all zero's) never got me anywhere back to a known map point.
Any tips about how to get somewhere, and how to use the jump gates to travel (how to know what direction you are going in) would be appreciated. So far I have mainly just explored in single player, as I want to get some experience and better skills before I get blasted to small pieces in multi-player.
Thanks for any guidance (literally!). A light in the window would be appreciated.
Alan.

Welcome to the game.
Most players on multiplayer are helpful - not hostile. You might be able to get good tips there from them.
The Nav Map has 6 coordinate entry boxes at the top. The RIGHT side boxes (SX, SY, SZ) are the SECTOR you're in if you haven't entered new coords to travel to. The Current Position box in the upper left corner should tell you this also.
The LEFT side boxes (X,Y,Z) are your position IN the sector (SX,SY,SZ).
If you open the Quadrant Map overlay (in the Nav Map) from the buttons on the lower right of the menu, you should see an overall map of 'charted' civilization.
Compare your SX,SY,SZ coordinates to the Sector coordinates given on the Quadrant map for the planetary systems shown, and you should be able to find the closest.
Enter the coords for the nearest system into the SX,SY,SZ boxes and away you go!
If you run out of fuel and have no way to refuel, you might be able to jump onto multiplayer and find a pilot willing to do a Search and Rescue to refuel you.

Hello vantiveman, and welcome aboard!

Marv's link to the H2GE is a great way to get a grasp of navigating the Evo-verse. What R.C suggests also works. Getting aboard one of the MP game servers is usually a really quick-fix, with other friendly human pilots to lend a rescue hand. They may ask you to toggle the TRANS POS or the PING buttons in the F-1 Nav console, in order to vector in to your position. Don't despair, help is just a log-in away! (Hopefully!) Which ever server in the list that you choose, right-click on the server-name listed to check for the presence of other human pilots.

Hi Guys. Thanks for the tips. I am jumping bit by bit on my way back to Saphire from Fauston. The disconcerting thing is that I occasionally bump into hostile ships (and usually reach the next jump before taking any hits) but I never see anything but my position in the Nav map. I guess I must be in 'uncharted' territory, but I wish I could see something else showing up somewhere in the map!

I'm supposing you have experimented with zooming the Map in and out to max. If you Zoom out to max to see if you see anything you will know if you are still rather out in the boonies - but there are close boonies and there are way out back boonies. From post: 169988, Topic: tid=11396, author=vantiveman wrote:Hi Guys. So if you see nothing, then enter the closest coords to civilization and with the Map zoomed out to max hit Auto Pilot and sit and wait - and depending on how far away you are - wait and wait etc etc.
When you get within range of a system you will see it on the map whe you arrive. You can speed thing up a wee bit by setting energy to max using the ] key -5s +5w, however if you are in a hostile system that cold open you up to a quicker death from attack since it sets your shield to minimun and energy to maximum.
What Jump drive do you have? C1, C2, C3, C4, or C5?
The lower the number the longer it's going to take you to jump back to civilization since a C1 can only jump 1 sector at a time where a C4 can jump 5 sectors at a time.
I tried just autopiloting from Sapphire to Olympus in the beginning and quickly found that to be a dead end for me - I'm too old to sit here all day and night and not get anywhere.
You should use Jump Gates to travel from system to system.
Once you find a Jump gate on the Nav Map - right-click to select it to place a Nav point on it to make it your destination - then set your ship heading to either 0 or 180 on the Compass and your Pitch to 0 - then depending on your Jump Drive class either Jump or Autopilot to the Jump gate and the 0 or 180 heading either one will take you rith to if and you should fly right into it with the above headings.
You should experiment in Sapphire until you get the hang of the basics of navigation.
This isn't a game you just hop into and go do your thing.
You have limited fuel if nothing else and there are a lot of ways to die quickly.
And be careful about that clicking on map items - like planets, asteroids, moons and just jumping willy-nilly or you'll go boom.

Hi Paul,
I'm managing three sectors per jump and rather than heading back to Saphire I've switched to head to Fauston, as it's closer. I'm hoping to find a jump gate there and head back to where I actually want to be. I have zoomed the map as far our as possible and have also zoomed all the way in, but I see nothing but me and certainly no jump gates otherwise I would have been outa here, so I must be in the way, way out boonies unless there is some other reason why I can't see anything on the map.
I have reviewed the nav tutorial from Marvin's post (Thanks Marv!) and I now have some idea of what I should be doing but I'm wondering if I have a messed up profile. I actually haven't been playing for more than a dozen hours or so, so I reckon the best bet would probably be to kill my profile and start again?
If I should see something on the map when fully zoomed out then I guess something is messed up.

Hi and welcome.
Space is big. Nothing wrong with your
profile. I've flown for days without finding
anything on my exploration trips.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for all your feedback. I'll put this one to rest now, as I have enough courses of action to follow. I'll start a new profile, but keep the 'lost' profile so I can just keep trucking through the boonies to see what I find. Indeed, Space is big, as described brilliantly in the opening works of 'The Hitchikers Guide to the Universe'.
In the meantime, I'll travel onwards, always keeping my towel close to hand.
