Why no tutorials on "new combat pilot"?

Post by harisund »

I downloaded the game, decided to give the demo a try and instinctively started out with a "combat pilot" option. Did the tutorials, took the first available "contract" where I had to protect a ship against enemies.

Now, I have some experience with flight sims, but I am new to the 6DoF concept, so I am still getting used to being able to do a 180 degree turn mid flight, while going "backwards" using intertia. But with practice I am getting better.

My question is, how come there are no tutorials anywhere on how to handle the first few machines as a combat pilot? Everywhere it's all about the mercenary options only.

Any suggestions on how I can improve? Sure, I could go back and create a new pilot and start out as a mercenary perhaps .. but I really want to give combat a try !

There are some basics of combat presented in the training mode built into the game, namely the 'Basic Combat and Weapons' section. This provides some of the core systems and principles you need to get started while also even letting you try them out on a practice drone. This is a stage you can repeat as often as necessary to practice managing your ship against a hostile that won't shoot back at you (use Alt-Enter to go back one training section at a time if you want to repeat any).

Beyond in-game training and beyond the real-world experience that begins once you start the game after training, you have several options if you want further training and information on the combat systems and concepts. First, be sure to review the instructions included with the game as they are a primary resource of information on gameplay concepts. For the 6DOF elements of flight control and weapons systems management needed to be successful in combat, you'll want to review these sections in the instructions:

- Flying in Space
- Threat Levels
- Targeting
- Primary and Secondary Weapons
- Heads-Up-Display and Cockpit

For further information and visual tutorials, visit the universe page here on the game's official website: http://www.starwraith.com/evochronmerce ... iverse.htm

There you can find tutorial videos including one specifically on space combat. You can see some of the concepts in practice and observe how and when to apply them. I also posted some advice for new combat pilots in this forum thread: http://www.starwraith.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=11069

From there, it will likely just be a matter of practice and one of the best ways is to join with other players online for some PvP training or coop together against hostile AI ships.

Have a look at the Hints&Tips Guide - it has a whole section on combat in the wider sense - ship set up and load out - tactics - basics etc.

Just beware of spoilers - there's 300+ pages of videos, hints, tips, discussions and tutorials collected from players and Vice :D
