Here are some general questions about the development.
Making a game is necessary for experience in such, so an idea is that space games have the least amount of requirements. What is E:M developed in, and would a free engine be an OK route? Is Unity optimized -- any good experiences?
Is writing an engine even a good idea?
Would be great to hear development pleasantries.

I am by no means an expert on the subject, but I do believe Vice pretty much made his own engine in the DarkBasic language. When it comes to experience, the StarWraith/Evochron/Arvoch games have over a decade of development time between them, so it might not be the easiest thing to make solo, not in a short time anyway (just look at Infinity...). Lastly, from what I`ve heard (and played) Unity is pretty flexible, and since Kerbal Space Program was made in it, that means you can make a space game with it. But my experience with programming is pretty much a few hours in Gamemaker and making school computers explode with bad Pascal, so I might not be the mst reliable source of information.
