Evochron still the best.
Just finished tinkering with free space 2 and FSO, and that was kind of a waste of time. EvoMerc is lightyears ahead. The Fate of the Galaxy mod looks promising, but their core is going to be well out of date, before they ever finish it seems.
Besides accolades to EM, I just wanted to ask what server you guys are on, because I was having trouble finding anyone in multiplayer.

I'm using Silicum v2, is this still the sweetest hud mod? I've also got the high-res nebula.

Hello AB777! Welcome back! It was good, and had a lot of fun flying your wing last eve! Sorry so short-lived. Let's do that again, if you're up for it. Always willing to assist a congenial wingman!

I should be on the CA5 server, later this evening - 6/7 PM-ish (PST). The CA5 grants me a slightly better ping-rate than most others, probably due to proximity more than anything else.

I gotta agree that Evochron is the best. I have and have played the FS2 and some of the expansions...but not in a long long time, but between that and the Wing Commander Prophecies there was fun to be had...when I need arcade combat this definitely fills that need. I will admit that I long ago took part in the kickstart and am excited for Star Citizen...but am leery that it seems "too good to be true". I even heard a lotta hype on the new X title...rebirth? reborn? I don't even know...I do know I own 3 of the X series...and could never get into them...heck I doubt I have more than 30 minutes tied up into that series sadly.
What I have always appreciated about the Evochron series is that Vice has always listened to his tune to the fans, the people whom play his titles, and how the series is exactly as it's described. I don't know what pulls me away from Evochron every year but I come back at least once a year and have since 2009 or 2008...I can't even remember now. Even when I'm not playing I'm supporting and selling others on this title.
I am also sooooo happy it plays so well on my college laptop (yep...hit 30 decided to go back to school and change careers.)...an Asus k55n with an AMD APU. Plays amazing...looks great. Now I just need to re-hone my skills again. I do kinda wish there was a "cloud" save just so I could have the same save between my gaming PC and laptop...but then again it's kinda nice to take different directions on each. I also haven't brought out the joystick..instead opting for KB + Mouse and using the mouse for controlling direction. Any tips there? I like it so far...a lot more than I ever thought I would.
I'm going back through the guides, youtube videos and just playing to get back the skills that left me with a save that has a nicely put together ship with about 69 million credits in the middle of a trade route that I can't remember aside from knowing it was very lucrative. I'm just going out and honing my combat skills and debating starting a fresh pilot for the sake of taking the fresh start route and honing my skills that way. I'm happy to be back and hope to end up online soon! Cheers!

I think I am going to add the folder to my Google Drive account. That's where i keep my homework for college as well. Works so damn well! Bouncing between school PC's, my laptop and home PC is a breeze.
I may have to check out some of those quest mods! I've just been doing contracts for military escorts. Been fun but very challenging, and at other times not very fun. I just made a huge post in response to Vices inquiries to changes to the game. I would like a hand holder mode...maybe one that doesn't impact SP/MP. But maybe I just need to man up and get better! I think I end up leaving and getting discouraged because of either getting bored with what I can do or getting pissed at what I can't...I'm hoping this visit is different! I will say the Mouse + KB method works super well...I love it on both my rigs.
My biggest suggestion was combat arenas. You could have them in space, in nebulas, on planets (both ships and mechs), etc. There could be betting, winnings for betters and combatees alike. Could be PvP or against AI too. I think that could be a good way to get folks used to combat in a sense...I dunno...it was just a random idea that sounded good to me! lol.
I think I need to hire wingmen and travel with them...I'm trying to take on too many fighters for my skill level. I guess part of me wants the arcade action...and the other part loves the physics...I just wish I could find a happy medium or separate game-mode for when I was in an arcade mood lol.
Here's to relearning this game when I have time! Winter break starts in a couple of weeks! Until then it's finals galore!

Good to know...I had no idea arenas were already implemented. I'd still like to see something vs AI that could be for people like me that suck and need more training.
I'll have to hop online if I don't take any extra classes during winter break.

On my last save last year I did...lol. I'm still running around on that save because it's got a good ship with good weapons and 69 million credits and I'm in the middle of a good trade lane that I can't quite remember where to go to get what and sell what lol.
So I've just been doing random merc contracts and working on my combat.
