fleet statistic

What does the fleet statistic mean in one's profile? Mine just sits at zero

It shows you how many ships are in your fleet if you have hired any relatively speaking that is iirc!....

I was almost under the impression that if one hired a fleet for a contract that the fleet disbanded at some point?

Depends if they all got destroyed in battle or not or that you dismissed them your self!......

I have found that they leave the fleet if I jump to a War Zone.

Yes, they do. Oddly enough, though, if you hire them while in a war zone, they will follow you out ... but, afterward, not back in.
