I'm working on some new backgrounds.
I finished one last night and it looks something like this.
If you want you can try it for yourself. http://www.2shared.com/file/NuQb-5fF/environment.html
Just extract into the main folder.
Right now I've got this background in stead of the green background.
Change the first number of each stars-file if you want to change it for another background.
Just because I see it right now: in your screenshot, there is some sort of "cut" in the nebula texture. Is it just here or is it in the game as well? If it's not just the screenshot, can you fix that?
Besides from that it looks awesome! Downloading now...

LOL...looks like Space and Time is folding in the Nebulae!
Good catch, I did not see it at first glance!.....:P

I had a closer look at the textures themselves. They're fine.
It appears the cut is caused by the skybox. The cut itself might be just one edge of the box. The images either must be modified to create one whole big picture when puzzled together the right way or you could make the nebula itself smaller, so they don't fill up an entire skybox-wall, leaving a frame of black space and stars that then would match perfectly with all the other images (that were modified the same way).
Hey G! Did a test-drive of your first offering/WIP. There's a bit of a swath of un-restrained polygons; looks like in one of, or a part of, the "star-box" corners (?). Most noticeable in Saphire system. Not sure if it's my side (vid card/system resources) creating/un-creating that's causeing the swathing. Eyes aren't good enough to determine which of the starsX-X.png files is involved. Just a note in passing.

When are you going to release a full version , i've seen the others . Really nice , could you have a download with the backgrounds for us to choose from ?

Hey Busch, thank you for your input.
I'm finding it difficult to understand what you mean. I think you are experiencing stretching of the image and pixels (not polygons, since polygons are 3D and pixels are 2D) become visible?
Maybe you can post a screenshot of your "problem" so I can determine what it is and/or where it is related to.
Through extensive experimentation, here's a personal quote from my own High Resolution Nebula thread that may help you understand the new cube map mechanics:
I'm still experimenting, and I've attempted to convert images (spheremaps) via the EvochronCubeMapUtility.exe program with...less than desirable results. First, the cube map is really just 6 square images (512x512, 1024x1024, 2048x2048) in which a single image (spheremap) is wrapped around. The conversion results in 2 things; First, the image is digitally zoomed to expand across the 6 images, and as a result, degrades the quality of even the highest resolution image. Second, the conversion stretches the image across the cube map, and much like an image impressed on silly puddy, the end result is a smeared image, especially noticeable around where the 6 images connect. So, I'm currently only using one image per map, and I'm using some creative license to connect the images. As of right now, each of the four sets (Blue, Green, Purple, Brown) consists of only one image per map.

Well, if I could capture and post a screenie, I would. The polygonal "swathing" that I saw and reported above, was eye-seeringly apparent with the 2.148/2.158 builds. With the 2.180 build, it disappeared, as have other things. I attended geometry class all day once, so I do know what a polygon looks like. What I saw was a "patch" of actual, real-life polygonal structures across half of my screen in just one area of the spheremapings' functional attempt to render the mod of stars2-0.png thru stars2-5.png. I assure you, it's not a lack of understanding of what's occurring with the rendering. Thought it was something fixable. Apparently it got "fixed".

I think in computer graphics lingo, they call that an artifact. Usually the result of some conflict between computer and program.
@Brennus : I experimented a lot myself and I am aware of how the skybox is made. But yeah you're right, where the 6 images connect is indeed very ugly, similar to the textures on the asteroids but much worse. That is why I altered the "top" and the "bottom" of the sphere to which it is now. But you can still determine a little stretching.
Right now I'm making my new background (the new green one) without converting a spheremap to these 6 images but instead just making the 6 images. Much better results but I'm not sure if i can make the brown one that way.
Tricky stuff.
@Busch : I'm glad it got fixed!
@Frost N7 : I will release a full version when I have a background for each color background (Blue, Green, Purple, Brown), so now I'm trying to finish 2 of the 4.
