If you compare them with images of nebulae from the Hubble telescope, I'd say they're pretty realistic.

Nice work 8rennus, can't wait to see the final results. Will these nebula be using the new cube-mapping system (or whatever the proper name was)in v2.x? And what's the resolution going to be?

"Will these nebula be using the new cube-mapping system (or whatever the proper name was)in v2.x? And what's the resolution going to be?"

I'm still experimenting, and I've attempted to convert images (spheremaps) via the EvochronCubeMapUtility.exe program with...less than desirable results. First, the cube map is really just 6 square images (512x512, 1024x1024, 2048x2048) in which a single image (spheremap) is wrapped around. The conversion results in 2 things; First, the image is digitally zoomed to expand across the 6 images, and as a result, degrades the quality of even the highest resolution image. Second, the conversion stretches the image across the cube map, and much like an image impressed on silly puddy, the end result is a smeared image, especially noticeable around where the 6 images connect.

So, I'm currently only using one image per map, and I'm using some creative license to connect the images. As of right now, each of the four sets (Blue, Green, Purple, Brown) consists of only one image per map.

As for realism, most Nebula are invisible to the naked eye and can only be seen via infrared technology, so some artistic license is justified here if you ask me.

 The easiest way to keep from distorting an image is to place it in one "corner" of a blank (black) graphic. It will still take some experimentation but, unless your image is supposed to cover the entire sky (like the Milky Way, for example), you'll need to imagine where it would normally be seen within the entire sky ... and place it there.

;) The first nebula is, I believe, a creatively distorted Horsehead Nebula.

Thanks for the tip Marvin. Here's what I believe to be the original image in which the first nebula was created from:

 Yup. You're correct. But compare the Orion nebula with that of the Horsehead ... then squint so the horse's head is fuzzy. You've got the big part of the nebula ... and that splotch in the lower-left. It might make you wonder if even the real universe is made up of fractals. Or, at the very least, computer generated.

We can wait, better to wait a while and have a great mod then have something thrown together to fast and turn out crappy.

A revision that re-arranges the nebula to match the original EM v2.X nebula locations, and a small addition to the Blue Nebula.

What will I see different if the images are put on a cube?

In previous nebula mods there were just flat image files. I thought they looked great. What would I see different from the old methods?
(redundant question I know)

thanks

 The old method gave you an image in the front and in the back (referenced to facing 0 degrees on the compass). The cube is akin to surround sound.
