Arc control option...

Post by Vice »

With the delays in getting 1.208 out as an official build until possibly next week, I decided to go ahead with another change for this build.

The 'Arc' control mode has been proving pretty popular among players, so much so that it may be time to integrate it into the 'standard' control system of the game. The plan would be to switch the 'Arc' mode over to the standard 'Medium' mode and then use the same system with further tapering for the 'Low' mode. The existing low and medium modes don't seem very useful to many players, often just delaying input from the player rather than properly lowering the sensitivity. So this change would remove the old modes and replace them with two new 'Arc' modes. The game would automatically transfer any existing 'Arc' setting to the 'Medium' setting.

If this is something you would like to see happen (or not), please vote.

I am currently using the ARC control because it's the only way i can stop myself flying like a total loon and it's not quite so annoyed with me when i jerk the stick around. So this is a definite yes from me.

That sounds great.

I'm extrapolating from this we'll still have the same 'high' setting, which is what I currently use along with axis curve statements in my stick profile.

Yes, the 'High' mode will remain as it is. The 'Medium' mode will be identical to the 'Arc' mode while the 'Low' mode will provide half the sensitivity of the medium mode.

:o I have no idea what this means. But I think I'm currently using the standard Medium setting ... with an old joystick.

It's like a line but with a curve. :)

If I understand correctly, basically the current settings have a 1:1 mapping, with a curve you have more control because if you move a little it will move slowly, if you move a lot it will move quickly. The current low setting isn't much use because it has a similar effect as using a heavier frame.

The basic idea is that by utilizing a response curve (or Arc) sensitivity to joystick inputs can be adjusted on a curve relative to stick position without introducing lag.

For example, using a 'negative' curve would mean that rather than having a 1:1 ratio (Stick position:control input to the 'ship'), you can have say a 2:1(or whatever) ratio near center that ramps or 'arcs' back up to 1:1 ratio at maximum stick input.

This would make the ship half as sensitive to control inputs at center, but you still get full control input at full stick. All without introducing 'lag' to the control system.

I hope this makes some kind of sense.

Gotcha... thanks for the explanation. That setup seems to be the standard for most things, now that I think about it. Explains why the movement is so touchy in this game!

I'm old and am easily confused! And being old, I don't like changes! If I don't understand it, I ignore it and hope it will go away. :(
I tried that with the IRS, but it didn't work! LOL
