anyone thought about populating planetary rings with rock/ice debris?? just a thought ;)

"jupiter as an example" cleaner ice in inner rings and as it goes out the rings get older and dirtier from collisions "or reverse?" "moons, asteroids, comets ect."in orbit or passing through rings .

with constant bombardment and accretion going on debris would be relatively small maybe ship size and smaller? with collision on pieces just massive enough to cause minimal damage and slight course change "something similar to debris field/nebula in freelancer" or even small ones splattering on shields with ship unaffected?

any chance of some of this in a future patch/mod? :)
just a thought, would make ringed planets look and feel so much nicer.

Sounds good but I imagine the limitation would be the number of objects you would need to surround a planet, especially in multiplayer.

I could see one way to introduce moving asteroids in the game - if the game created asteroids randomly when you jump into a sector. I imagine this would be possible because it could treat the moving asteroids the same as enemies/other ships. Just model a few asteroids, take away the guns, give them a randomly generated fixed direction and change the collision so it does damage. The moving asteroids could be limited to certain sectors.

Not exactly the same as what you're talking about but it could add to the game I think. Imagine having to chase down an asteroid and keep formation whilse you mine it, or using an incoming asteroid to your favour in a sortie. I think it would a cool feature that could be relatively easy to implement.

 The type of motion you're describing probably fits a comet better than an asteroid.

Well what do you think happens when you blow up a large asteroid in space? ;)

Actually I kinda like the random asteroid idea... There could be a ring around a star covering multiple sectors in a circular pattern. Within these sectors there could be random mobile asteroids as well as many large ones that are stationary, as well as heavy numbers of stationary fields like we have now.

Talk about a jungle gym in space... Flying combat missions under those conditions would be quite exhilarating! There could be places to hide, special ore could be mined in random asteroids that have to be found like crates. Some asteroids could contain hiding places and hidden stations (maybe even enemy stations that fire back and must be destroyed.) There could be races through huge asteroid caves. Plenty of really cool possibilities.

As for comets, I would love to see those added as well, except in the context of this sim they might work out better as stationary objects like planets, black holes and the like. Maybe something like a planet but with a tail (more mobile asteroid sectors?) and research colonies instead of trade cities. Seems like they might be remote and out of the way but visible from afar?

 Check out the Sol system for a ring of asteroids. And, perhaps, Vice has already added an asteroid base hidden inside a larger field of asteroids. If not, you can always check out the asteroid caves which are scattered across known space.

i just threw whatever popped up in my head lol. populating space with tons of stuff may not be possible "if not limited or even a workaround to achieve the desired effects" with current bandwidth and processing power constraints.

the aftermath of an asteroid passing threw an ice ring were a small section is displaced as if it had just passed not long before someone showed up at the scene. same could be said with planet/moon impact were the asteroid left a monstrous crater and lots n lots of ejecta floating around the impacted area or even formed an accretion disc or even further a partially formed moon glowing red and still being bombarded by debris from the past destruction. "for gas and ice having it recollect to its original or near original shape over a period of time" would be cool for ships to cause similar effects.

for some of the random moving bodies might be interesting to have as a moving resource giving an interesting twist to mining. keeping up with and mine it. for comets have a debris filled tail were if your in it getting at the valued ore your constantly getting hit with chunks of ice and gas jets making it hell to navigate safely.

anyways there my 2 cents :P

ohhh. are there derelict ships floating around in space??
