Science Advisor question

Post by Tonic »

I bought this game a few days ago, and after getting past the learning curve involved I'm really starting to enjoy this game.

My question is concerning the Science Advisor crew member I hired. When he tells me that there are hidden crates around and go to this heading; how long do I need to go before I find it? I stay on the suggested heading for awhile and never find it. Do they show up on my radar?

Thanks in advance for any help.

 You might also need to adjust your pitch (up or down). You never need to go beyond your current sector, 'though.

Hello Tonic.

Welcome if I haven't said it before. One way of finding them is to note the instructions and then make a jump (N, S, E or W) and he will give you new instructions.

You now have two lines that will cross somewhere. There you have the goodies. There are a thread that deals with this in more detail if you search the forum.

See ya out there. :P

Hi Tonic, welcome to Evochron!

Try jumping in and out of the sector 2 or 3 times, using the Nav Map to see which way you are pointed and triangulate to pinpoint the location.

If your science officer has a low skill level his instructions may not be very accurate.

Hi Tonic,

Sure you could calculate where it is located by jumping into and out of the sector several times but I can't be bothered. I just go in the direction it says and if I don't get a purple blip after a little bit I set loc (using the button on the nav screen) to set the nav point to my current location and jump out and back in (by manually changing the sector while leaving the other coordinates the same) to get a fresh bearing. Usually only takes me 1-3 readings to find it that way if you start near the centre of the sector.

Having a cargo scanner C5 is a big help as well. I have never run into a container that is in a totally empty sector, but lots of sectors with objects in them also have containers.

Most of them just have fairly cheap goods but there are some good ones out there. I just found a bunch of containers yesterday (ie multiple sectors each with multiple containers) and one had something that is worth a couple million a unit (but you can only carry six of them max, to people who have been playing a while that probably tells them what I found).

Happy hunting.

When the science officer tells you about an item, how does that appear in the game? A text message, just a purple blip? And does that happen in multiplayer? I've had a science officer on my ship for the last four hours-ish of multiplayer gameplay, and I don't think I've been alerted to any containers.

I was also staying in the same system the whole time, so is that the problem?

Yes, you will get a txt MSG giving a heading and a pitch from the officer when U enter a system or sector within a system if there is something in that sector. And Welcome to the forum and the Sim. In case I have not said that 2 U before. Have fun and hope to see you out there sometime.:)

Hi Woden,

The crew members are infamous for not earning their keep! But sometimes they can come in very useful. However they do demand extortionate wages, so don't feel guilty about pushing them out the airlock from time to time!

 The message shows up in the chat box as soon as you enter a sector with stuff to report. To get your science officer to repeat the report, you need to jump out and back in to the sector ... the method most treasure-hunting pilots use to triangulate on a reported object.

Thanks for the help. Funnily enough, shortly after I asked that question, my science officer gave me a pointer for the first time, so I guess the moral of the story is "impatience ftl."
