Getting killed in stations

as it says...I'm minding my own business docked at a station, bunch of baddies show up and shred me to pieces.

Oh, and whenever these pirates show up, they don't care about fat merchants, they always want to destroy my empty, tiny ship.

That's just not right.

Well, why are you hanging out in an open station hangar? Especially in a hostile system? Why not enter the station and remain safe while you conduct business? If you are just sitting in the docking hangar, you're still out in the open and are vulnerable to attack. You will need to plan ahead to dock safely if you intend to just hang out in the open space hangar indefinitely. There are equipment and license options available to you to also help.

The fat merchants either pay for "protection" or have very good "friends" ... while you're all alone, minding your own business, in a strange sector of the galaxy. The attitude of many hostiles is such that they don't really need a reason to attack ... they just shoot you for the heck of it.

Because I was under the impression I'll be safe there.

How do I do that? I thought the only way to dock is where they want me to dock - at that open spot?

That's where you dock, but you can also enter the station (and you have to in order to access the shipyard and hangar). Click on the 'Enter Station' button.
