hey all!
i'm playing the demo at the moment.
is there a way to get the targetting system to select not only ships but also stations, planets, cities, and way points...
unless i've missed something i can't seem to do this.
thanks.

You can right click on stations/cities when you have the nav-console open.

Welcome to forum and sim!
Evochron series targetting system is really useful actually. Makes you focus more important things...
STATIONS:
You can select stations to jump with NAV comp (F1), do right click on them. You see them in your radar as a dark blue blip for info their positions, for manual docking or using them in combat etc...
PLANETS and CITIES:
When you jump in a sector with planet, you see green plus signs that represent cities. When you approach a city, landing guidance automatically activates itself to show you the way. Also, you can lock planets with your NAV computer again to help you see their positions in your HUD for special purposes.
PS: Do not press F2 (jump) button after selecting a planet(right click again) on your NAV screen! Landing on cities is another story...
WAYPOINTS:
After accepting a contract, you will see WP indicator on your HUD. Press F2 to jump there. If you want to adjust it, open your NAV map and make a new one with left click on your mouse. You can use your mouse wheel to zoom in and out and rear view to adjust your WP's height...
Every jump point you make on your NAV computer(F1) is a WP actually(left click on your Nav computer). If your WP is too far away from your location, you can use autopilot, very useful indeed.
You can create WPs manually to use coord boxes on your NAV computer. You can save important locations etc...
CARGOS:
White dots on your radar, automatically locks when you get closer...
Welcome to forum and hope to see you out there in MP...

We have had this targeting question come up before. I think Vice clearly made the case for the way it is. You want a combat targeting system to target ships, not stations or other artifacts. The other navigation tools do a fine job of presenting the necessary information for finding the other artifacts, without hogging the combat system, which is, as it should be, dedicated to targeting ships.
The main advantage here is that you can track the closest enemy while you are moving toward a station or a cargo pod without having to switch targets. All the information is provided, but without having to switch modes or whatnot.
p.s. keep a finger ready on the "nearest hostile" key.

Yup, you can read more about the reason(s) why there are dual tracking systems here:

hey guys thanks for the replies.
i read the reasoning for the two targetting systems and i agree with them.
but targetting shouldn't be a function for only the combatants. targetting a station, a small cargo in space, etc... would help in navigating through the often busy radar.
i'd much rather prefer the option to filter the targetting system manually: combat targets only v. all targets.
anyway...i've purchased the game. its better than any i've tried.
