Good to know Whytephyre. I am glad I have forgotten the exact coords for Legends, means I can go find it again if I can resist the temptation to look them up from my Legends map log. I can't say I found the coords fair and square in Legends, so now would be the time to find them legitimately. At least I spent a few hows trying to find the centre of that circle before I gave up. I will probably have much better luck this time, I believe I was searching too low and to the left in Legends.

I have just been to Sol, after I test some of the changes in 1.092 riftspace seems like the next obvious stop on my tour of the new universe.

Well you know, ELOSTR (or whatever).

Actually I never did figure out how to use ELOSTR. I have a degree in physics so I think I was reading too much into the clue and trying to be too fancy with how I worked out the coords. Once I gave up and just pulled them out of the universe file I still couldn't see how ELOSTR gave those coords.

The method I have decided on is a more systematic survey. I have begun noting down the system and SX, SZ I am in while traveling on autopilot (helps to have a spare laptop with a spreadsheet on it). I then survey in 17 sector wide strips for a couple of hundred sectors before moving over 17 sectors and going the other way. I effectively sample about 1 out of every 170 sectors. I have nearly 500 entries now and while I haven't found anything I have noted that I have been in no fewer than 16 hidden systems.

I have started putting together an x-y scatter plot, forming the basis for a system territory map. With a fair idea of where the system boundries are I should be able to home in on the actual objects in them. I started out where I was pretty sure I was at a lower SX and SZ than riftspace and started working my way to higher SX and SZ. After a while I got fed up with my level 2 fuel tank requiring me to keep setting up fuel processors (which now have a small cost but are still a godsend for exploring) and I headed up to Lambda to swap it out for a level 10. Since then I have been travelling to lower SZ from Lambda.

Before I went to Lambda I believe I found the system where the riftspace gate is located. I managed to map a big chunk of the left hand boundary with the next system over. Regardless of whether I am remembering the name of the riftspace system correctly that will be the first system where I try to get a complete idea of the boundary and start hunting for whatever objects the system actually contains.

With the exception of one time when I ran out of fuel I have been saving my progress and I am counting this as my main profile rather than an alternate. I am paying for this expedition because of a full crew, hanger fees and now the deployable fees (even before the fees the "free" fuel from a processor actually costs me more in hanger and crew fees than I save by not buying from say Pearl hidden at like 220 a unit, but at least I can do it in the middle of nowehere). So far I have spent over 2.5 million on my survey voyage. As I didn't even change systems once between my last save and running out of fuel I am happy to let that one go rather than resurvey the area. To compensate I might drop a fulcrum on some Vonarii for kicks when I get back to civilised space, been meaning to check out what the splosion looks like in Mercenary.

The Fulcrum explosion is rather big. I actually blow my self to pieces a few times before I figured out how to use it! :P

I'm exploring the similar way actually. I created a "website" locally and plots what I find there!

I am using a graphing package that lets me zoom in etc so I can have a plot of the whole universe in one graph. I could also do a 3d view of object coordinates, but I don't see the point unless I find something off the ecliptic.

That sounds great. Is that some kind of freeware software or have you coded it yourself?

No it is something I have left over from my student days. It is called Igor pro and you would have to lay down serious cash to get it legitimately (although there is a 30 day demo version available) and invest serious time learning how to use it properly (less if you happen to be an experienced programmer).

But I am not using it to do anything fancy at the moment. I could have done the graph in excel, but the way I was entering the data wasn't in the format it wanted so I would have to hand specify the range for every series. It was just more convenient to dump the data into a more powerful package.

Here is a sample of my survey so far. Spoiler alert albeit minor since I have cropped out the values on the axes:

Just for kicks, here is a sample of how I used to use this graphing package. Since the request in the OP has been answered I donk think it will be too rude to highjack the thread a little more:

That looks cool. I will probably stick to my website then. I also store coordinates in Excel.:P

LoL, im old-school like cabeza de vaca or columbus, hand drawn maps & notes for me! As a result my maps are only mediocre (but my notes & coords are solid).

Ok my hidden system count is up to 25 and I found 6 hidden planets in those systems and a star.

I have also done a quick jaunt to a galaxy far far away and back. I gave up looking for riftspace and got the coords from Legends. It was close to where I was looking (I had passed within 50 sectors of it) but I was searching in the wrong direction. Finding that hidden solar system satisfied my wanderlust much better than rediscovering the riftspace jumpgate would have.

I still don't get how you derive those coordinates from the clue, if anyone has the inclination to send me an explanation you are more than welcome.

I think I might go do some military missions before trying to find some of the more famous hidden systems. I have already done a significant number of military missions in two of the war zones. Maybe I should do a tour of duty in all the others as well.

Scrap what I said before about surveying the universe in 17 sector wide strips. I had a feeling the scanner range hadn't changed since EL but I was stupidly acting as if it had. In EL the outermost sectors on the Range: 8X were grey rather than black and you couldn't see objects in those sectors. The gray border has gone in EM but you can't see objects in those sectors.

Guess I will be surveying the universe in 15 rather than 17 sector wide strips.

Hmm, those new systems look interesting. Might be time to take a look around Atlas.
