deliver satellite mission
I seem to be having all kinds of trouble with these missions. I'm on my VERY FIRST IMG mission, where I have to deliver a satellite to a waiting battleship above New Hope. I take the mission, fly to the battleship, get inside the green box nearby, match speed with the ship, hit 'J' to jettison the satellite (which is the only way I can see to "deliver the cargo", and then...nothing. The cargo box just floats away.
I don't understand why I'm having so much trouble with this game. I'm a very experienced gamer, I'm a programmer, I'm literate (meaning I read instructions and manuals), I'm reasonably intelligent...what am I doing wrong?

Do not jettison the entire cargo bay (J), instead, just click on the item from your cargo list.

This type of deliver mission requires you to open up the inventory screen (F3) and left-click the object to jettison. Wierd, I know, I don't like it either, but it's the only way.
Edit: Darn it, Vice beat me to it.

It won't be the only way after the next update, you'll be able to jettison your entire cargo bay if you like for these contracts also. But the left click isn't really anything wierd, it's the same way you give/sell an item to a station... the only difference here is you're giving it to a ship instead.

But, for delivery missions, you can jettison your cargo bay, it just seems funny you have to click this one individually, especially after I played EL for such a long time, getting used to the jettison.

Yeah, jettison works for cargo delivery, even though it tosses everything out. Guess that was a carry-over from the old code base. And since quite a number of players prefer to use that, it'll be kept and statellite delivery added to it.

Ok. So what was weird about the mission is that it was only on my third try that the ship hailed me and requested a trade (or something like that). The ship was in a green reticle (which it had never been before). Now--the word "trade" led me for some reason to think I needed to open the ship-to-ship trade window F4, I think, to hand over the satellite.
Nope. Turns out it was the inventory window.
Maybe I sound a little snarky--I don't really mean it. I really think I'm going to like the game, once I've been through everything once or twice. It's just that some of the instructions are either completely lacking or counter-intuitive.

It only takes an instant for delivery, I don't recall any delay.

Yes but once you match the speed while in the green box it is harder for the satelite to float away behind you.....

Best way is just Inertial at about 2,000K towards the center of the green box. Open your inventory, and as soon as you're in the box, click the item. Doing it this way makes these contracts by far the fastest.

I totally agree with RobDog, there is not uch reason to stay inside the green box.

There is not. But if you like the green box and you wan't to relax for a while inside it matching speed will let you stay inside and anything with you.....bathe in the soothing light of the green box...LOL....
