Lol, I wish I had something more than a rendering for ya to download. As it is, i have never modded a thing for this game....but, might be willing to give it a try.
My question is......is it possible? I assume it is, but don't know if there are reasons why the elements I have added in the mock up wouldn't work in the 3d cockpit
LOL....it would be nice if this cockpit could be made interactive and that with TrackIR you would be able to zoom in by moving your head closer to the displays to read the navigation map and quadrant map....:P:P:P:P

At this moment it is not possible w/o Vice's help (software side). And, I have concerns that, pilot view would be too narrow and pilot's head would be positioned too back to see many MFDs at the same time. Reading Mfds would be more difficult...
Using bottom of the main MFDs would be good imo. That area is empty and the feeling would be like IL2's cockpits fo example. To look at them, a little down head movement would be enough (with track IR, would be great).
After using my sister's laptop, I've come to realize that the amount of cockpit seen depends on your screen ratio. At home, my monitor is somewhere around 3:4 ... so the cutoff is right at the three main monitors. Wide screen, on the other hand, also displays some of the side panels.
I do use trackir and (selfishly) am picturing this with the use of head tracking. I agree that placing them below the MFD's would work well, but also, with head tracking, the area to the sides just below the window would work fine as well. I don't think you would have to push the view back, but, again, I am not picturing the use of this without head tracking. Actually, I cannot even imagine playing this sim without head tracking; it is so fit for it and works so well with evochron.
I suppose the idea is increasing immersion, getting away from pop up screens and putting more of the control and feedback systems into the 3d environment.
But...if the screens wont refresh, then there wouldn't be much point. And Maarschalk, I agree....interactive would rock, but, lol, I can't even crawl yet, much less run....
The cockpit idea looks pretty neat, though it doesn't leave as much room for viewscreen. I would probably eliminate the sector map at the bottom, since it is too small to be of much value.
If you removed that, then you could inch the side monitors up a little bit and then you could have more viewing area.
But, yeah, I think Vice would need to do it since it would require more coding than is doable in the customization kit.
