I bought this game yesterday, and being a big fan of a multiplayer universe I would like to host a multiplayer server on my main PC. However, the manual states that I shouldn't have other programs running in the background. This is not possible..
Are there plans to expand on the multiplayer software in the future? Or is it possible to reserve resources on my computer to safely run this software without interference from other software?
My specs are:
i7 920 @ 3.8Ghz HT enabled
6Gb triple channel
60/6 Mbit effective fiber connection
2x 5870 (probably not relevant)
It would be great to have a universe with hundreds of players in it, and to have it function like an mmo, but I guess thats not gonna happen. Would it be possible to have a 35 player game running in the background while I can still perform other tasks like watching a movie or download and not have packet loss?

Just because I'm curious - why would you want to take up a MP slot if you are actually watching a movie?

If I want to host a server, the software makes use of my CPU and Internet connection. If I want to run it 24/7, that would mean that in theory I can't use my computer for other means. If you host a server you take up a slot anyway, so whats your question about? There are 36 slots, so 35 free slots.

I believe he mistook the reason for your request because of something that EVE miners are notorious for: Watching movies with the the game as a background task, only checking in every so often to empty their cargo bays.

With a system that powerful, you could probably run other things at the same time with a minimal to moderate impact on performance. Multiple core systems generally suffer far less performance degredation as more tasks are running.

Thats good to know. I'm sure there are free cores when I'm playing the game.Originally posted by Vice

Thanks, and I haven't really decided yet. Thought I'd call it, "Netherlands". Oh, and only for MP profiles. I'll set it up, and see how it goes.Originally posted by BraveHart

edit: the server is up and running..but there seems to be no way to create MP profiles specifically to my knowledge.

I was thinking along the same lines and would probably leave my machine on 24/7 and might be okay for the Pesky Europeans, especially those Brits.
My specs are:
Athlon Phenom II X4 (overclocked to 3.9Mhz)
4Gb 1600 mem (to be overclocked and upgraded to 8Gb)
20Mb Sky Broadband
A bottleneck might be the broadband connection.
I was thinking of giving it a silly name like MYBWorld just to annoy my next door neighbour.
Would such a system be feasible?

Side note:
Just tested the server, but I got thrown off after about 15 minutes of play, sigh..
Does anybody know if disconnects are a common issue? Could it be a problem that I'm running both the server software and game client on a single computer? My connection is OK.

I think a lot of people are forgetting that MOST server software even game server software tend to run completely external to the game engine itself. Basically running a "framework" and nothing more. For whatever reason I'm not sure the way Evochron's Server seems to operate is pretty much with the game engine running although for the most part hidden it requires considerably more in terms of resources than most game servers would.
I would love nothing more than for Vice to rebuild the server in a way that is much more efficient and in turn could be designed to host a lot more players than the 35 or so that it can now but at this point I can only assume there are good reasons for him designing it the way he has.
And yes I am aware that the standard "rule" for running servers of any kind is that the machine be dedicated to that server system but I've run servers of almost every type and unless you're sporting a 5000+ "user count" there's really no need to dedicate the system to the server alone unless of course the server software for some reason requires it regardless of the actual user count.
Edit: By the way I'm not having a dig or anything but I think it does need to be pointed out clearly that EM's server software isn't like other server software where you can fire it up in the background and just let it do its thing. I'm sure you could do that with EM's but after having done some testing with EL's server and a little bit with EM's server I came to the conclusion that for the server to run optimally you can't really run anything else that might be graphically intensive. Similarly if you're running the server it can destabilize other applications.

Thats very useful information, thanks. I simply dont have the resources to have a dedicated server.Originally posted by TGS
