Chat Window and log messages

Post by soulsacrifice »

Vice, would it be possible to have a seperate box on the right side of the screen so that chat messages are not displayed along with other messages?

It would make it much easier to follow what people are saying in multiplayer. If it was possible to minimise these boxes then we would only see the information when we need it - useful for taking screenshots for instance (right now when you minimise it, it will pop back up as soon as another message appears).

Also, would it be possible for it to not repeat the message if the message that came up last was the same. I think it would be much less cluttered this way.

eg. when i'm jumping i'll hold down the button sometimes so that I jump as soon as I have enough energy and it will read:

insufficient energy for jump
insufficient energy for jump
insufficient energy for jump
insufficient energy for jump
insufficient energy for jump...etc

when hanger fees are collect it could just say Station fees collected for 1,2,3,4 & 5 etc. instead of listing them each on a serperate line.

Anyway, just a few suggestions. Would like to hear what other people think as well.

That would place such text over the player list and/or consoles. Probably best to keep it with the main message log. However, you can customize the color of various types of text message, so you can make multiplayer chat messages stand out much better. I think tbird has a custom file to do this with the color red somewhere on the forum, or he could probably send it to you.

When you'd get more than 2 or 3, the line of text would cut into the console much further and/or start to run off the end of the screen. They'll need to be line by line. This may help though, you can quickly clear the enter text area with numpad *, or simply use the mouse wheel while holding the pointer over the scroll bar to quickly sort through text. You can also click on hold the button to scroll the text, but the wheel is probably easier and faster for most players.

EDIT: you have replied while i was writing :D

..it's a good idea but if is not possible, a solution might be to have the message of the players in different color from the game's message

I'll try modding the colours. Thanks.

What about repeated messages? Anyway to stop getting the same message multiple times? or a way to minimise the chat box so it doesn't come up until you call it? I know about the deleteling all messages key but I have to do it constantly when i'm flying around taking screenshots in multiplayer - and another one always seems to pop up just after i've cleared the last.

Not currently, since those are event triggered (and I might get inquiries asking why the game gave the message once, then just beeped at them when they kept trying it). I might be able to add a 'force hide' mode for the text messages, but that would mean you may miss important warnings and alerts and of course, and any chat messages from players, until you recall the window. I can send over one idea via u2u for taking screenshots while keeping messages out of the shot, if you like.

1 - with the customizing kit, can i change front size and color (example, only for player message) of the chat?

2 - can i send a private message to a player not in my range (example: /tell name ecc...)? or i must target to private chat?

3 - i know that i can speak (voice chat) with my clan (ID) but can i write only with my clan by text chat?

4 - hemm.., sorry i don't understand, .....wich is the function of the lobby inside the station? is it the same of the normal chat?

Thx

1 - Color, yes.
2 - No, must be in range with a secure target link.
3 - No, not currently, voice chat would be best for that.
4 - The lobby takes you out of space and puts you in a secure location, eliminating your exposure to the threats outside. Text and voice chat still work as normal and you can still access the trade console/options.

The force hide would be ideal because i'd want to be able to take screenshots with the text also, and I can always recall the messages if when I hear the beep if I need to.

Hey, sorry to ask this but I may as well add it here. Would it be feasible to add groups to nav map logs? I never really used the nav map too much in Legends because once you have 20+ logs it is very hard to manage them. With the introfuction of player built stations in multiplayer and all the new systems to explore I can see me having hundreds of different locations saved in the log. If it could save a textfile for each group and let you save the name of the group it would be a lot easier to find what you're looking for/save notes etc.

One way to re-sort and organize your map log is to just open the maplogX.sw file in notepad and swap the lines around to you get the layout you prefer. You can also edit the descriptions this way, just don't make the lines too long.
