Connection Issue

Post by Swashbunglar »

I have a very annoying and frustrating connection issue.
With Evochron Legends, I can host game, connect game, run server. ect ect.
I have ports set for Mercenary but cannot even host via local ip "10.0.0.10". I can't connect over router. Basically Multiplayer is completely non functional.
Now my nephew can connect to internet games with no issue over same router.
So I would have guessed it's AV/Firewall... Well I've disabled NOD32 and Windows firewall, made exceptions. I've even uninstalled and reinstalled Mercenaries... STILL no way to run or connect to multiplayer.
I just get the vague.. ip may be wrong or blocked. Zero windows firewall or AV alerts.. Nothing.

Yet Legends game and server work fine in all aspects.

Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
Processor: AMD Phenom(tm) II X6 1090T Processor (6 CPUs), ~3.5GHz
Motherboard: ASUS Crosshair II
Memory: OCZ Reaper 8192MB DDR2 1066 RAM
Video Card: 2x NVIDIA GeForce 1GB 9800 GT SLI
Sound Card: SoundMax ROG Supreme FX
Network: Marvell Yukon and nVidia nForce 10/100/1000
NOD32 Antivirus and Windows Firewall.

You may have your router properly configured for Legends, but not Mercenary yet. Check your port forwarding/settings. The ports for Mercenary are different and require both TCP and UDP, rather than just TCP as it was with Legends.

Thanks for the reply but my issues was far beyond basic router setup....

I already set up router ports for both games.. 3888TCP-3889UDP and 3998-3999TCP That's the first thing I do with every network game. But second it couldn't connect even via LAN (to self) or localhost (127.0.0.1) at all. Multiplayer refused to work.. I couldn't start or connect to a multiplayer game. Tried the open internet games (Romulin One), no go for me, but my nephew on same router connected easily. I even uninstalled NOD32, disabled windows firewall, tried Zonealarm Firewall to kill windows firewall.. NOTHING worked.
I was even disabling IPv6 as some games don't like that either.. No joy.
I had VMPlayer networks and Hamachi, but I disabled those then Uninstalled both.. no go.
No other game has given me this much trouble.
I finally said screw it, reinstalled windows, reinstalled my drivers, reinstalled game and viola.. I have absolutely no clue what was killing my Mercenary. I have never in all my years encounter something difficult to nail down in a network connection.

Anyway if I find out what exactly Mercenaries did not like (software obviously) I will repost. Otherwise you're in the same boat I was in if you encounter this same very odd problem... You're SOL and may need to reinstall windows..

Now I'm off to install server and set that up.

I currently have the same issue too, got my ports forwarded and no antivirus is blocking it.

Same issue. Ports forwarded. Unable to join/host. No other issues with other games or connections.

If anyone else formats like Swashbunglar let us know of your results. I am not ready for drastic measures at the moment, but may be persuaded that I have a good reason for computer "Spring Cleaning".

For those of you who can't connect, if you haven't already, please send me a MSINFO report on your system ( http://www.starwraith.com/evochronmercenary/faq.htm#8 ) and marke the e-mail with something like 'CONNECTION ISSUE' in the subject heading. I will consolidate this data and search to find what all of these systems may have in common from a software standpoint. Maybe then we can figure out what it is that is blocking these systems specifically from connecting.

I'm non tech, so, probably misreading the problem. But, from other postings, I've noted that you can't run the game, and a server, on the same computer, one, or the other, but not both.

Others' can explain it much better than me - good luck!

The topic covers ALL multiplayer connections. Be it in game host, lan connect (join), internet connect (join), or running dedicated server. None of which would connect (running alone), or host before reinstalling windows.
We're talking dead to the network. You can't even LAN host/join.

Yes you can run BOTH the dedicated server and the game on the same computer. IF your rig has the muscle. lol
Would you like screenshots of this working?

Played all day today with two other people. With a dedicated server running and mercenary running on my system at the same time for several hours.
You and everyone on LAN would just use your LAN IP("Local IP" on the server), well internet users would use the internet IP to connect and join game.

You can also find your LAN IP (Local) by clicking Start, type in cmd and press enter. then type ipconfig then enter again and it will spit out your gateway, internet ip, lan ip, mac address.. ect ect.. This would be useful for those running multiple IP's or maybe a VPN like Hamachi. I have found however on my other systems you must disable (temporary) hamachi your network connections in order to join a game.

To disable the Hamachi VPN network adapter for Win7 users.
Click Start and type in ncpa.cpl then hit enter. Right click on Hamachi and disable. Next time you reboot or manually re-enable Hamachi, it will work again as normal.

But back on topic.. I've loaded up almost everything I had before and still have yet to repeat the connection issue..
I wish I would break it again so I can at least know what it was and report back.. But so far no news.

How is planet detail settings in anyway related to network connection?
I am connecting fine now after windows re-install and my display setting is set to the highest on everything...
I find it highly unlikely display settings in the game affect connection.. Maybe lag.. but not complete rejection.

I can almost guarantee it's some other program or windows update/setting that was the cause of complete network failure in Evochron.

No one here even mentioned a resource issue. I think maybe you're posting in the wrong place. I think your issue would most likely be simple lag and not complete connect failure.

With the help of Gouitsu (thanks!), a solution was found, at least for certain system configurations. His system had Hamachi installed and that program had somehow found its way into his network list and moved/removed his local LAN IP/connection, without access to that, the game could not connect to a server over the internet. So once he had disabled that program and cleared it from the network list, he could connect and join fine. So this is something to check for anyone encountering consistent connection problems.

Well I had hamachi installed before. I disabled it and even unistalled it it made no difference. I still couldn't connect even with hamachi completely gone from the system.
I have hamachi installed now and I can just disable it run server and it works fine. (after complete windows reinstall)
The only thing hamachi does is create a VPN and a gateway of 5.0.0.1.. It tries to route everything through that first.
So that's a minor flip of a switch solution, but not what I was experiencing at all.
I even explain how to turn off hamachi to connect in a few posts up.
I have yet to recreate the issue I had before with a new win install. I have hamachi, mysql, skype, pidgin, mediaportal, teamspeak, all over the network.. yet I can still start a server and it connects.. no problem. I don't get it lol*shrug*
It's like a fresh win install was the silver bullet.
I'm trying very hard to break it again so I know the cause.. but so far nothing.

For those having connect issues actually caused by hamachi, I suggest making a shortcut to your Network Connection so you can quickly jump in and disable/enable it as needed. For Win7 simply right click desktop and click new>shortcut. Copy/Paste in the following target path and apply.

Code: Select all

C:\\Windows\\System32\\ncpa.cpl
This will open right to your network connections where hamachi resides.
