IDS : can we choose cruise speed

Post by zijulo »

Hi pilots,

I wonder if we can set the max speed in IDS mode. According to quality of the engines and ship agility, it's of course at our own risk to setup a higher max speed in IDS mode, but it seems there is no reason to limit max speed. I didn't find this fonctionality in EM. Is this possible to do ?

Not sure I understand the question, but yes, you can set inertial at any speed you choose and it will hold that speed

Hello zijulo, sorry but no. The max IDS speed is determined by the ship frame and engine mainly. You have no max if you have IDS off. IDS could be thought of as a cruise control in your car and you can't go faster than your cars engine can push you.

Ok thanks.

It would be usefull to set higher max speed in IDS mode. For example, when you fly on planets, you can't use Inertial mode because of atmospheric friction, so it would be usefull to set an higher IDS max speed. Evochron's physics is realist so it would be possible (and more realistic) to be able to increase IDS max speed. Of course doing this would reduce ship's agility because thrusters are not powerfull enough.

 Yes. If you've boosted your speed above 4,000kps with inertial on and tried maneuvering with thrusters, that very thing becomes quite obvious.

It happen sometime that I push the afterburner too long, then I exceed my goal at full speed and it is long before the ship can stop. I realy love Evochron's Physics ! I have never seen such realism since I-war2 :)

LOL...noticed that trying to get quickly to astroids for mining and could not slow down fast enough and what happens next is your either toast or you over shoot and slide by the astroids and you see them disappearing in the distance before you come to a full stop and you have to start maneuvering back...LOL...:P:P:P:P:P

"Hi zijulo!...IDS max speed depends on which engine you use...To get max velocity straight ahead I switch to inertia and apply afterburners to get max speed and that would depend on how much fuel you want to burn...After I reach my speed I want I just turn off the fuel and coast away" ;)

Yes, in fact it is on planets's atmosphere that it's hard to go faster than cruise speed. We can push afterburner a littre, release it, push it again etc. but it's dangerous and it spend lot of fuel.

"Yuppers....I agree with you there, if you ever find yourself having to DogFight in a Planets atmosphere be real careful of your speed especially when turning...Too fast and Boom! makes for Great Screen shots, LOL" :D

You should be safe up to 1500 klicks/second. You can also reinforce your shields and install a shield array recharger to reduce the burn damage.

That's a good tip, Thanks :)
