Love this game...

Post by Crashdown »

Hi everyone,

I'm quite new to this series, tried jumping in on the Alliance demo ages ago, but didn't give it long enough to get into it. Was an X player for a few years, and loved Privateer 2 in my youth.

The new EM videos got me very excited, and I consequently bought EL to tide me over to release day. I'm getting the hang of things, finally managed to win some space battles last night and I am finding ways to earn money much quicker, which is allowing me to beef my ship up slowly but surely.

Been staying as spoiler-free as possible and can't wait 'till I start encountering some of the interesting/weird stuff I gather is out there.

This is without doubt the best space-sim I've ever played, and if Vice is reading this, you've done one heck of a job.

I'm hoping to try out MP tonight (a European server), so if I manage it, I will hopefully see some of you there.

It seems there are a lot of new people coming into Evochron series with EM.
Glad I'm not alone.

Thanks for the welcoming everyone.

@PingBosun: Sounds like fun, I will try my best to be there Thursday evening.

Had my first taste of MP last night on B5, a very friendly atmosphere. Got taken out a few times by Romulan, does he have a stealth generator or something? Seems to just appear from nowhere.
Also he seems to know where I am at all times, is he merely patrolling the noob hotspots (sapphire & Eratu) or am I giving away my position somehow? IDS is off most of the time.

One question I have is, how far from another ship/station does one need to be to not show up on their 'contact' list?

I have more questions, but am gonna learn as much as possible through trial and error and chat on MP.

There is no escape from being noticed anywhere. If you press & hold the tilde key [scroll lock on some keyboards] you can see your stats on the upper left and all other players on the right. This includes your sector position. After that, it's just a matter of closing in.
And yes, the Romulan does have a cloaking device. They are available at certain places in the game.

Jumping an empty sector and cruising with max speed is a good method for hiding...

 Also, since Rommie can only see your sector coordinates, steer clear of the most obvious places in a sector ... like the station. And, yes, he can cloak ... except when he enters the high-energy nebula (the main one found in Sapphire). The high energy blocks missile lock-ons and stealth generators.

MMaggio did advise I flee to the nebula, guess now I know why.

Had an SP session last night, managed to upgrade my frame a couple more levels, boosted my shields and learned to adjust power levels in a fight. I managed to kill quite a few rebels without ever being shot down by them, even took on packs of 4 or so, so am now feeling a little more confident about handling myself in MP.
Keep getting attacked whilst docked at stations though, gotta learn to boost my shields before docking or save up enough cash for some licenses.

Got to make a trip to Fausten soon too, and if I remember correctly I was not too welcome last time I ventured there.

A tip from one rookie to another. ALWAYS keep moving. I never let speed drop below 1k (IDS off). Change direction frequently in battles. It's relatively easy to shoot down incoming missiles with IDS off. This might not be the way of the more experienced pilots, but it works for me. I took down 24 enemies in one fight the other night and only got hit a few times. :P (Yes, you oldies. This might be childplay for you guys but I'm still learning :))

See ya out there in EM!?!?!

It's taking a while to leave behind the X ethos of stations safe, space dangerous, but I'm learning slowly :)
Missiles aren't much of a problem for me, don't think I've been hit by one in quite a while (whilst paying attention anyway).

Yeah I will definitely be jumping into EM, though sadly won't be able to join in if it launches this weekend.
Got the final MP of EL to look forward to tonight though!

Thank you Dengar.
I do my best to be a pain in the butt and learn the "oldies" to keep practicing. :P:P:P

It's really hard to get a hit on these experienced guy's, so I'm quite happy taking him out at least once! :D
