Private Server Password

Post by Swashbunglar »

I've setup a private server.
I can connect via lan and/or internet with no problems.
Until I add a password.
The client at no time asks for a password, I don't even see an option for entering a password.
The client will connect and then be promptly booted with an "incorrect password" error.
Is there some secret around this, or am I forced to go without password or forced to public server setting just to have password security?

On another note, any chance of the server being ported to linux?
Sure would be nice to have my dedicated on my 1gb internet linux server. he he
I would even pay for a linux server download.

Thank you for responses in advance.

Private Server Password

Sounds like you might be trying to connect to it via direct IP rather than using the server browser. The in-game browser is needed to enter a password as the tags left to indicate a needed password are directed through that system. When the game sees the server on the list and you click on it to join, it should prompt you to enter a password. If you can't do that for some reason, this technique may work. Click to find internet games, click on the one you've got listed, enter the password. If it fails to connect because it shares your same internet connection, it should just drop you back to the main multiplayer menu. The password should still be stored at this point, so you can then go ahead and connect to it via direct IP and the client should validate the password with the server.

No plans for a Linux port since no viable/compatible development platform is available for it.

If it's "private" it's not on the public server list. If I have to go public, login, then switch to private, then login. I would have to reset the server for every user. Not exactly a sensible approach.

Straight from the text2.dat. "private" server.

Code: Select all

' This line is for the privacy mode (0 = Off which lists the game publically, 1 = On which does not)
502=1
From this information I have 2 choices.. Private no password and public with password.. Neither amuses me, but I'm seeing I have little to no choice.

Why would you need a password if it's a private server that only you know the address to?

It's ok I think I'll live. *starts to twitch*

Everything is pretty much controlled with the GUI in the server program. You click on the X next to the name of a player to kick them, Alt-click to ban them, adjust packet update rates with the option on the right.
