Super noob, very lost

Post by sage »

Been playing for hours, but the only mission type I've been able to successfully complete is the drop-something-off-for a ship mission.

I tried the blow up 20 asteroids mission, and it registered my first 3 asteroid kills only, but none after that, despite killing dozens.

I tried looking for some piece of navy equipment, and I *think* I found it (it was a "Mach 12" floating in space). I got with in 70m of it, but it didn't register as found. This quest was noted as a "just get close to it" dealy.

Soooo... what am I missing? These quests seems broken.

Hello sage.

I'm quite new at this game as well. I noticed that you should almost collide with objects before it
get registered. Maybe you took to long time to blow up the asteroids. I have no problems with these missions.
I warp to the location and start blasting away immediately. Easy cash in the beginning is cleaning solar panels and mining for platinum.

Hope you get it going.:P

I didn't see this before, did many asteroid mission, even in MP w/o any problem with other pilots...I suggest you to try one more time. Don't leave the sector and blow 'em up...

Get closer :) Fly on it, it doesn't harm you, don't worry... Purple(or pink???) dot on your nav computer...

Dropping cargo missions are more difficult than roid missions or lost cargo missions imo. I guess, you have to try one more time each, seems no problem for me, don't know such a problem coming from other players...

Let us know the results pls...

Good flying...

 Some good advice from above. To repeat, make sure you stay in the sector when doing a contract.

For asteroids, approach close enough to almost fill your windscreen ... the 'roid should definitely be bigger than your HUD's outer aiming circle.

And objects, such as cargo containers, show up as little purple blips on radar. The easiest way to find them is to set Intertial, jump to the location plotted on your navigation map, and coast until the dot appears ... then cut Intertial and turn to put the dot in your crosshairs. Finally, add power to intercept the container.

Hello sage, There are two types of Lost equipment missions. One mission you only have to find it and as soon as you are close enough to it the mission will say completed. The other mission you have to bring the item back to the station to complete the mission. Keep trying and all will work out. Welcome to the forum and the Sim. See you out there sometime.:)

Remember that everything you do in MP counts the same as SP, so if you join MP, the server itself can help.

Thanks for the advice and feedback -- I'll keep trying. The game seems to have a lot to recommend it.

Where do I buy a tractor beam? They're not for sale on evochron station, or the city I landed at. Do they just randomly spawn?

 The tractor beam is a fairly low-tech item. Dock at some of the stations/cities in Sapphire and eventually you'll find one for sale. Btw, if you attempt to accept a contract that requires the tractor, you'll be told it can't be done.

 As soon as you find one, buy it and take it for a spin near any city. Have at least four cargo slots empty. Then start mining for gold, silver, diamonds and plantinum ... filling your ship's hold and selling it all at the nearby city.

Still no sign of a tractor beam...

Next failed quest: I can't figure out how to deliver passangers. I found a guy who needed to Erato station, so I took him there on full after burner. I should have been paid $90k credits (120k after reductions for time); instead, when I dismissed him in the crew section of the station, I got nothing. What's the method for these?

The method is to just deliver the passenger. But you need to deliver the passenger to the correct station. So make sure you travel to the correct sector location, not just the first station you get to in that system. Lastly, you do not need to 'dismiss' them, they will automatically leave once you dock at the correct station.

I must not have docked at the right station, but I sure thought I did. It was labeled right on the map. It can be hard to tell sometimes -- I can't read the text on the nav map very well.

Edit: it can also be hard to read the full line of text w/ regards to where the deliver is supposed to go to. It's cut off on my screen.

What do you mean by cut off your screen? In the message area or the nav map. If message area, that shouldn't be clipped since it'll appear in the middle of the screen and you can scroll back to view old messages. If the nav map, try using a different text mode (highlight).

Thanks all -- I'm starting to get the hang of it. I found that watching the tutorial videos for Mercenaries was quite helpful (even though there are some differences).

I don't think I've really figured out how faction works, though.

In Legends the factions are Rebels and Guilds are the bad guys. Navy, Energy and Miners are the good guys and are part of the governing body of each system. So doing contracts and missions for the Navy, Energy and Miners improves your reputation in each system. And doing contracts and missions for the Rebels or Guilds ruins your reputation in each system. So in a Hostile system every one is mostly red to you meaning your the enemy. Now you start doing contracts for the Navy, Energy and Guild you become friends with them and after several contracts they will start to turn yellow and green meaning your reputation in the system has improved with the governing bodies. If your reputation becomes good in a system the Rebels and Guilds will turn mostly yellow and some green meaning they will leave you alone.
If you do contracts for the Guild and Rebels you become the Enemy of the Governing body Navy, Energy and Miners and they will always be red to you and so your reputation will always be hostile....;)

Sooo... I'm in Olympus Prime right now. Pretty typically, I could see three different ships on the scanner: green, yellow and red; and all three were faction "Navy". Sooo... if they're one faction, why are the different?

They are mercenary pilots operating for the Navy faction, not all of them will like you.
Sooo... how do I tell the difference between a real Navy ship and a mercenary working for the Navy? I kill the former, I'm sure it would be bad for my relationship with the Navy. But what if I kill the latter?

Factions are not hiveminds. Some members will like you, some will be neutral, and a few might want you for target practice. The further you progress, the more of them will be friendly to you.

I advise against shooting any of them - blood is thicker than water, and you're just a cheap, expendable mercenary. If you attack one, his factionmates will help him, creating a massive Charlie Foxtrot with you in the middle. Run your missions. Buy a station license if you must, so you can safely dock, but keep out of pointless skirmishes with the local bravos.

You got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em,
Know when to walk away and know when to run.
You never count your money when you're sittin' at the table.
There'll be time enough for countin' when the dealin's done.

That is, unless you're actively looking for trouble and a cheap target. Then all is fair in love and war.

There is no way to know the difference so shooting at any governing body or their mercenary deputies will work against your reputation.....;):P
