What is a Fulrcum Jump Drive and how does it work?

Post by Vice »

Thought this might be of interest to some who've asked about the tech/functionality behind the concept of the Fulcrum Jump Drive found in the game.

The term 'Fulcrum' refers to a pivot point of a lever. This central location of contact reflects the principle behind the jump drive technology found in Evochron. A Fulcrum Jump Drive operates by creating a pivot point in space between two locations. One of the locations is the ship's current position while the other is a destination the pilot selects and enters into the navigation computer to tell the jump drive where to go. When activated, the jump drive concentrates a massive amount of energy to form an artificial event horizon (fulcrum point) in front of the ship. As power to the event horizon increases, the gravity it generates also increases and forces the ship to be drawn closer to the fulcrum point. The gravity field is extremely precise, focused directly back toward the ship it is attracting. The jump drive maintains the event horizon at a set disance ahead of the ship, so as the ship continues to move forward at an increasing velocity, the fulcrum point also moves at the same increasing rate, staying ahead of the ship at a consistent distance.

Image

Eventually, the increasing force of the event horizon and its gravity brings the ship to an extremely high velocity, fast enough for the ship to safely pass through the fulcrum point. When the ship reaches the event horizon at the required speed, it triggers the folding of space between the two points, the ship passes through the event horizon and arrives at the destination location. The scope of the event is so precise and narrow, that only the ship itself is able to pass through. However, even to create an event horizon this small requires an extremely high amount of energy to generate. Ships are generally left drained of their power reserves and the release of energy creates a bright flash of light visible to any nearby viewers.

WOW ! Einstein couldn't have explained it better.
It's things like this that make me suspect Vice is really an "Alien"! ;)

Cool. What's the science behind not being able to look around? and will it be the same in EM? :)

 I imagine it's not a flat event horizon. Being focused, it's probably curved, forming something similar to a wormhole. Ergo, blocking light from entering on all sides.

The way Vice describes it, it sounds like he has used it a few times before!;)

Yeah I saw him do it in person, shortly after I completed Arvoch Conflict, he came to recruit me to save the universe.

BTW does he count as an alien if he's an android?

You currently have four options to look around:
1) the view controls
2) the pan controls
3) mouse look
4) TrackIR

Yes, those options also exist in Mercenary. :)

U missed the one I try to use the most .......The radar

After all if its not infront of your guns ......you cant shoot it .;)

Yes, and I want to be able to look around as I jump with these options. Try it and see what happens though.

It resets to the centre as you jump (using freetrack at least). It kills the immersion a bit for me.

Nope, using a wii remote. Just though that was the way it was. Must look into that now then. Might test it with a webcam and see if that changes anything.

The problem is probably video-card related. During a series of hyperjumps, I get a rapid flickering (where I see my cockpit front view) at the middle (high point) of the jump. But it lasts only a fraction of a second and only when I'm looking around using the HAT. If I use the Insert, Home, Page Up or End key ... I don't get the flicker.

 Personally, I attribute it to the time-displacement effect brought about by the event horizon.

Yeah, I had a look today and it still centers even if you use mouse look etc. it's the thing that you're describing marvin, but I don't see how it would be graphics card related.

I really think it is just as the game is loading the new scenery (or moving you to the new position) that it just "forgets" (resets the direction you're facing and loads it again after the jump). If it is, I hope there is a way it can be changed.

Nah, that's not it. I have changed the center button to one of the x52p buttons. Doesn't seem to be anything to do with FT either since it also centers even when using mouselook.

Thanks though, and any more suggestions welcome!

It only centers the view momentarily, then it returns to whatever position it was at. The only things i'd be running are the saitek profiler software and freetrack. At least now I know it's not supposed to do it. I'll have a good look next time i'm playing, if I can't find the cause then i'll assume it's a hardware thing. I have it installed on my netbook too, can't remember if it does it on that.
