HOWTO: Twitchy Combat & Controls

Post by Eschotaeus »

Greetings,
I just bought the game a few days ago, so I admittedly am not all that familiar with the default control scheme, but in the few hours I've snatched to play I've grown to like it. So when I read your proposed layout, my initial reaction was "pft, no way." I must say though - as I read the explanation, it made more and more sense. Halfway through, you convinced me. As soon as I get home I'm going to rearrange my keybinds.

Now I just have to sit through a six more hours of work. My launch anticipation is even greater!

I'd also like to thank Vice for having the knowledge and imagination to make the space sim that's everything you could possibility want in one. Thanks also goes to the community, which is definitely the most friendly and helpful internet forum crew I've ever seen =).

Yeah, this setup does make a lot of sense. Well designed, a good alternative to the default scheme.

i am currently unable to play, but once i get a box with working windows/get EL working on wine i may play around with this... oh and i live the fact that you mention players not having to use mdts to hit you, if the player dosen't know how to lead a target with the mdts off (i can't shoot with the mdts on, as i naturally do this and it causes me to miss) they probably don't know how to find the trigger anyway... unless it's a computer ship, in which case they are a piece of piss to take down...

oh and i love playing chicken with enemy shots, flying at them head on, then dodging at the last moment... confusing both the MDTS and making the target think you have been hit (as you swing back into your approach vector as soon as the shot is past to hide the shot flying past you, unless the target is firing a volley in which case you dodge in a different direction so your path never stays predictable) (not to be advised as you need to have an INCREDIBLY maneuverable ship to do this fast enough to get out of the way of the shot because it moves so fast) but being able to do this lets me take out the upper-end frames in a talon with -5s/+5e without taking any hull damage... so i don't think i'll touch the afterburner that much (as in my experience it doesn't apply to "strafing" controls (annoyingly)) it's useful to create the distance after colliding with my target's shields (in a spiraling pattern so i collide with them from behind as at that range it's very hard to dodge a shot (well quite hard) (point blank missiles normally mean this doesn't happen)

oh and the AB does help escape from missiles

TLDR: i like the keyboard layout, but not for flying exactly as you described

:( Why is it when I stop to read these really long posts and then click on "Today's Posts" to see what else is new ... all the "illuminated" (unread) lites have gone out? Is there a time limit or something? Or am I just a really slow reader?

Just kind of the way the forum software works. To make reading through them easier with modern tabbed browsing, it's usually best to right click on the thread topics you want to read from the today's list, then open each one in a tab. Doing that without closing the original tab will let you pick and choose which ones to open and read without expiring the list.

Again, just the way it works. It's still considered an 'unviewed' post if you do not view your new post. Probably just the way the XMB developers decided to set it up.

Even forums that use cookies (to initially determine which posts are new) have that problem. Log out before reading all the new posts and the otherwise unread lights will all be out when you return.
