N00b Questions (before buying)

Post by RedCorvus »

I'm sure you guys get these questions all the time, I did try to search around the forum but did not find what I was looking for.

I'm really thinking about buying the Evochron Legends but...

The entire game is only 48MB ?
Is this just the installer program? Becuase X3 (gold edition) is 10GB in size

How big of a game is this? Not just in HDD space but in playing too, is it just as huge and gigantic as the other space sims?

I loved Independence War 2 - Edge of Chaos (personal favorite), the entire X series, FreeSpace 1 & 2, Freelancer, Dark Horizon, DarkStar One, Earth & Beyond and cant wait for X: Online Universe. So will Evochron be just as good as these? Will Legends suck me in and take all my waking hours like the above mentioned games? Or will I play for 15 mins then wish I never brought the game?

How are the graphics? They look kind of dated in the screenshots I have seen, is there the graphic settings to crank up to improve the graphics?

And please tell me this is not one of those cheapy games that I buy then 30 seconds later hate myself for wasting my money. What is the addiction level like? The more addicting the better the game LoL

Is it only a sandbox or is there a background and story going on? Quests? Good mix of different things to do? Can you put up factories and buy cargo ships to buy and sell for you? NPCs to interact with? Customizing? I do love customzing!

How is the multiplayer part? My roommate is also thinking about buying this game and the entire house is networked... could we just play together or are you forced to use one of the company's servers with others? Possiable to have private multiplayer games guess is my question.

I thank you for putting up with the newcomer questions and any input you may have to offer me would be great, thanks!

Biggest positive I have seen so far... great community :D

Biggest negitive I have seen so far... Only 48MBs??? :o

OK, first of all, you realise the answers you might get might be biased, considering this a forum about the game? :P

Anyway, answering questions:
-Yes, the game really is that small! And yes, that is the installer program.

-Assuming you mean features etc., then yes, it has an awful lot. I've never played any of the other space-sims out there, so I can't compare, but there is a lot (look at the strategy guide to get a indication of some of the stuff: )
http://www.starwraith.com/evochronlegen ... lguide.htm

-Yes, your free time has probably gone down the drain if you buy this game, but again, I can't compare to those other titles.

-The graphics are pretty good, but the new version of evochron coming out (evochron mercenary, out hopefully in september) has amazing graphics.

-No, you will not wish that you had never bought it - it is very addicting!

-It is a complete sandbox, so you can do practically what you like. However, if you like having some kind of story or quest to follow, there are two 'beacon quests' you can follow, which can help lead you into the game and also reveal some of the hidden features of the game, once you get to their latter stages. You can also get contracts, where somebody employs you to do something - there's a good mix of these. The game is more focussed on an the independent mercenary aspect, so you can't build factories etc (although building space stations and similar will be in mercenary!). You don't talk to any NPCs, but you can go on multiplayer and chat to whoever's on, and you can interact with space stations and beacons and the like, which is kinda similar. And you can completely customise your ship - max engines and shields for combat, or cargo bays for mining and trading.

-Multiplayer can either be LAN or over the internet. So you can play with just your roommate, or you can join the online community (the Babylon 5 server is the most popular one).

-And I realise I'm not the best one to say this (so few posts!), but no problem answering questions (if you get stuck on the beacon quest, here is a good place to ask!)

Anyway, big post! Hope that answered your questions, and hope to see you flying out there sometime! :)

Legends doesn't let you build stuff. Mercenary, on the other hand, lets you build a number of different stations (see the Mercenary section for the link to a detailed list). And, no, you can't become a shipping magnate ... but you can interact with AI (NPCs) in both Legends and Mercenary. You can also customize your ship. Additionally, in Legends, you can customize most of the game itself.
How is the multiplayer part? ... could we just play together or are you forced to use one of the company's servers with others? Possiable to have private multiplayer games guess is my question.
Multiplayer is great. No appreciable lag whatsoever. And anything you do in single player will be carried over into MP (and vice versa). You can set up your own server ... there's even a download for setting one up. But, to be honest, the best server is run by a guy named MMaggio (leastwise until Mercenary goes gold).

I have played and completed Freelancer Long time ago, and since I got Evochron Renegades and Legends about 1 1/2 year ago I have never played Freelancer again.
Freelancer had a lot of freedom and Evochron Renegades and Legends have complete freedom. I still play Legends when ever I can. Even though it is very small in size it is big in a lot of different ways, and because of Vice the creator of this great great game it has the best consumer satisfaction in my opinion. And compared to other more expensive huge games it is way beyond the competition for its price. I have been looking for other Space flight simulators and so far I have not found any that matches or compare to the greatness and beuaty of Evochron Legends. Like as mentioned you can download the demo for free and can spend unlimited time in the training mode till you get comfortable with it........;)

I'd recommend the game. I've been playing it since it came out, and, I'm still finding new things, and places. Don't be put off by the small footprint that the game takes up on your HD, it's massive, really massive.

You've got civvy ships, with cargo bays, and military ships without. The civvy ships are for making money, and the military ones for exploring and killing things, and each other! That's not to say that you can't have a killfest in the civvy ships.

Unlike many games there is no stage by stage progressing through a game, it's completely open. Make the money to buy ships/equipment/fuel, then do just what you want to do. You can take on a quest, you can explore, make money in various ways, do civilian, and military missions. It also handles a helluva lot of controllers.

You can mod away to your hearts' content, and, we have some very good modders within the game community. I've been playing space sims since away back in the '70s, and this is the best that I've ever came across.

You get into MP with your buddies and its fun time. And, yes, you can set up your own server.

There's a downloadable demo. Just download the game and you go into demo mode until you buy the game. The demo only lasts an hour, but, if you go into training mode, and ignore the training instructions, do you own thing, you can use it for as long as you wish, though you only get one system to play in, Saphire.

Thanks for all the feed back, I'm off to purchase the game. Yes that small footprint is abit scary but it sounds to me like a good game to get lost in. Plus the multi-player aspect of it sounds like fun for sure. Not to mention I have not heard anyone say anything bad about the game.

Thanks again everyone!

The small download size is intentional. You can read more about why and how here: http://www.starwraith.com/main/dsize.htm
Not to mention I have not heard anyone say anything bad about the game.
Even if they did/do, it's certainly subjective and what is a great game to some isn't to others and vice versa. That's why I want to provide demos for my games, so you can try them out before you buy to insure system compatibility and to test whether a basic feel of the game confirms that it'd be something you have fun with or not. If you're a fan of IWar2, you're probably not put off by control, physics, and ship system complexities that add depth. And you probably have the patience to handle a higher learning curve. Add in trade options along with multiplayer and I think you'll probably enjoy the game. Have fun :)

The size of the universe. Hmm, actually, Vice, how long would it take to fly between the two objects with the largest distance between them in the basic ship with full afterburner? =P

I played them too. They are big space games indeed... There are advantages and weaknesses compared to each other. Someone likes it, someone likes another or hate it. It happens...

Evochron Renegades,Legends, and at last Mercenary... You can play them as single and If you want, go MP... Play like a single game(almost the same)... For free (no fee!!!). We had very nice times in MP, and I can't wait for new ones...

But I must say, If you say me "play those games again that you listed above", I can't... Sorry... I like freedom, in real life and in my video game as well :)

Welcome to mighty Evochron Universe...

Hi RedCorvus... welcome to Evochron!

Yes this game is massive, and I mean massive! I've been playing for about 1 and 1/2 years and I'm still discovering new systems and planets. You realize just how big it is when you try flying from one system to another without using the jumpgates... it can take you hours in realtime! As well as all the exploring/moneymaking you can, do the combat is great... very realistic and difficult to master.

Apart from being an awesome game you get amazing customer attention from Vice. He is the developer and is always trying to find out everyone's opinions and ideas for improving things with regular game updates, and now the new game Mercenaries. Unlike the big corporate game developers he's not after milking your money... he's only interested in creating excellent space sims for other people to enjoy.

Then there's the community and forum... a great bunch of funny, supportive, and mature (some more mature than others:D) people.

In short you won't regret buying this game!

Dunno, I've never tried to put a man on you :P

IIRC I think the current estimate for the first manned trip is that it would be 6 months there, and six months back, including 3 months on the planet it would be 18months.

It's worth pointing out that the space in the game is somewhat 'bunched' for playability. Vice could have used more realistic spacings even upping the distances by a factor of around 100 ( or possibly 1000 ) but this would make the game less fun.

LOL....Yes, for the perspective of playability it would be less fun if it was real time. Imagine six months of playing jus to get from Earth to Mars......:P:P:P:P:P

149 days (Say: HUNDRED-NINETY-FOUR)?! That's a lot. Well, who has a spare computer and a massive harddrive to record that journey for us YouTube-people?

Your saying it the Dutch way Tha_rami....LOL....:P
149 would be "HONDERD NEGEN EN VEERTIG" (HUNDRED-FORTY-NINE)

194 would be "HONDERD VIER EN NEGENTIG" (HUNDRED-NINETY-FOUR)........I guess my Dutch is not that bad yet...;):P

Oh, right.

I don't think that had to do with my English, more with that it was 6AM (SAY: SEVEN AM) when I posted that and that was before I went to sleep after a long 16 (SAY: SIXTY-ONE) hour wake. =P

I did not mention anything about your English. Just an observation of how the Dutch think when it comes to numbers. However if a Dutch suffers from number dislexia it might get confusing........LOL......:P:P:P:P:P
