What is a CM?

I must wonder what a CM is. I press C, and boom, a purple explosion comes out the back of my ship. What does it do?

CM = CounterMeasure, an anti-missile device.

Make sure to use them as they are free with every refuel so no need to worry about saving them unless you plan a long trip through hostile systems with no refueling stations on your route.....
