What type of game is this?

Post by Kesselring »

I don't know if this is the best place to ask this but I need some advice. Ever since I started playing flight sim games as a kid I have been waiting for the day when games like this would be created (real newtonian physics with a stable internet play). I have read all the basic literature about the game and I am extremely impressed. From all I have seen this game is the greatest leap forward for any flight sim in the past 10 years. It looks beyond all my expectations and usually when I get this excited about a game I have to ask myself. Could it really be true? A quality game with a good community? Basically I want to confirm that this game will be as fun as I think it will.

I am not asking the basics of this game but more what the community is like. How many people are usually on multiplayer? Does this game require a lot of "farming"? If you have to spend 3 months farming up a good craft in this game to just hope that every night at midnight 1 or 2 players might be willing to duel you I am going to be very disappointed in this game (and will probably give up on flight sims altogether). Please tell me people like to PvP and large dogfights happen often.

If you read and follow the instructions and don't bother with exploring, you can likely build a decent ship in about four hours of continuous play.
Personally, I don't reccommend this as you miss out on exploring and finding "interesting" things.
The game has a totally seamless universe, you can fly to and land on planets, but you can't exit the ship. Planets have diverse atmospheric conditions and planetfall can be very exciting.
Legends is supported by a 24/7 server, but as Eclipse has pointed out, player participation is low during the summer months.
However, if you're lucky the server admin can and does offer help & tips.
Legends is not an MMO and there have never been more than 16 players on at a time. Even so, the universe is so vast that you might not meet up with another player unless agreed to meet at some mutual system.
Legends supports the formation of "clans" and allows for the sharing of contracts. This can be very helpful for new players.
I could go on, but you should get the idea by now.

Large dogfights have happened from time to time though, last time I took part in one there were 5 pilots on each side, and believe me it's hectic enough for me.....

hehe, i'd have to agree with verb,i'm more of a one on one man, ilike to throw some agility round, and i hate taking down one ship that has me massively out armored and powered, just to have another one shove a missile up my a** at point blank range (that's the only way i have died since i mastered the art of not flying into stuff... much (well except the odd collision into my target to add some distance))

Hi Kesselring, Welcome to the forum and hopefully the game. PvP sessions differ from day to day, hour to hour, some times there is only 1 or 2 and sometimes there are 8 to 16 players on at the same time ussualy during the weekends but then again now it is summer so it varies from season to season also. There is so much more to this game then just PvP and I would not just buy the game because of PvP although it can be lots of fun at times........This game is more about exploring discovery and having fun playing an excelent and entertaining game.......;)

:o Lordy ... how many topics have you guys hijacked this week?

 Anyway, MP is very stable in this game. So the potential is there for really good player combat scenarios. Problem is, such combat takes a lot of planning and at least a handful of players who are willing to abide by a set of rules.

:o Personally, I've found that rules can kill a game faster than ... than Maars can kill a topic.

Thanks everyone. I did not expect so many responses so quickly. So someone talked about have to organize people to PvP. What is the best way to do that? Do you go on the forums and make an announcement or does everyone use a specific messaging service or vent?

You can use this Forum and create a new Topic with your specific times you plan to be on so others could join at that same time to play PvP Sessions with you.....;)

 Might want to think about adding a few rooms to that TS ... in the event it gets crowded.

Evochron Pilots,

Currently the server is set up for only 8 channels. If you genereally feel that there will be more required I will increase it to 16, which is, I think, the maximum number of pilots that have ever been on line at any one time.

Until now I though Bossk and I were the only users!!!!

I think that is the most that have been reported to be on at the same time, but I think it could be more like support for 32, but maybe your right it has to be setup on the server side to allow for 32 or 16......;):)

 If Verb's idea catches on, at least two "working" channels will be needed ... one for each side.

It isn't. TS is set at the moment for a max of 8 people, but I can/will increase that to 32.

Any player can create his/her own dedicated channel on the server. This is achived by one of the players creating their own channel, with channel name and password, and then giving that password to his/her clan members, who log in to that named channel and hey presto, a secure channel for that clan has been created. Once the clan members all leave then that channel disappears off the server.

So in effect there could be a total of 32 different channels, each with one person on it. Not much point since they would be talking to themselves. In some cases no change there then!!!!

BA Clan would be happy to assist anybody in doing that. Just drop me a U2U and we could arrange a little training session of setting up dedicated channels.

Happy to help and look forward to welcoming all newbies!!
