Is this a gem waiting to be uncovered?

Post by festa_freak »

Hello all.

I have been a fan of space sims for a while now. My first was X-Wing alliance!

I have since put hundreds of hours into the X series. I haven't played many others such as freespace or freelancer. I tried EVE last Christmas but it was just too similar to the other MMO behemoth I was trying to escape from :P

Anyways. I have read a little about this game and just downloaded the demo (It's installing) and couldn't help but notice that the installer needed 144MB. How vast is this game. I know games of old would be that size, but I have seen the screenshots and the graphics look pretty good. Usually games are multiple DVDs now.

How big is the universe?

I'm going to go try it out now!

Hello :)

I just played for about an hour. I went through the training tutorials and they are good.

The first thing I did was buy the class 5 cargo bay and mining/tractor beam to go and make some honest cash. Then I clicked the 'contracts' button before I left and saw an easy contract to bring something to someone and accepted!!

Problem is, I looked in my inventory at the item and clicked on it to try to see what it was but it ejected from my cargobay :(

I tried looking around for it and on the map but couldn't see anything.

If you eject something is it completely gone from the game or is there a way to pick it back up again?

I like what I see so far though. MANY good ideas. One of the things I miss most about the X series (that was in X-wing alliance) was the ability to manage energy IE: shields and weapons.

I also had a 'wow' factor when I was told about the inertial damper thing. Almost every space game I have played didn't have realistic flight physics and this one at least makes an attempt to explain why we can turn on a near dime in space :P

I'll keep on playing the demo, but I am seriously considering purchasing this.

EDIT: Oh yeah, I guess there is the whole other side of multiplayer. Are most people trigger happy or friendly? 'Cause if I bring in my little cargo ship to do some honest trading, I don't want to get blown out of the sky.. er... out of the .. nothing.. what do you get blown out of anyways!

Clicking on it discards it, essentially destroying it, except when you are near a delivery transport on contract. Jettisoning cargo (using the jettison button) drops cargo containers behind your ship, which you can recover with a tractor beam. You can see what an item is in your inventory console by simply holding the mouse pointer over it.

Most players are pretty friendly online, you'll find a few that enjoy picking on noob's (stares at Romulan), but other often come to the rescue to defend new players.

Edit: Oh, forgot to mention, there are instructions included with the game that can help with many of the basics. Open the 'readme.htm' file in the game's install folder.

Welcome to EL and the forums, festa_freak!

If you are still deciding to purchase it...do it. It is a great game with a great price tag. If you decide to purchase, I hope you will join us on mp. Most pilots are very accommodating of newbies and will protect you from the few who are not. But we aren't too nice; when the time comes that you are ready to start PvP combat just about all of us will be ready to oblige ;)

Oh, and the universe is....large. For all practical purposes it is infinite.

 And it's all one, big, gigantic universe ... not just a bunch of little boxes linked together by jump gates (although you can get from one place to another a lot quicker via jump gates). If you have the time to experience "the vastness of space," program a nearby star system into your navigation computer, load up with fuel, and head out via autopilot. Then go fix yourself a lunch, do your homework, watch an episode of Doctor Who ... and then do it all over again ... and again ... until you finally reach your destination.

;) 'Cause, even though you'll probably doubt your navigation skills about halfway through the trip, eventually you will get there (unless, of course, you have good reason to doubt your navigation skills ... that's when multiplayer comes in handy).

Thanks for all the replies. Looks like this is another tight knit community. I read through some of the read-me. Particularly about mining and I learned ALT+B kept my beam on!!! So I went and made a sandwich.

I have 30 min left on the demo and will probably buy it after exams are all done. I didn't get much studying done this weekend :(

I look forward to multiplayer! How many people at a given time are on the servers? And is there an unofficial meeting point in the game where people congregate?

The server can handle up to 35 players at a time.
However, this is not an MMO and the player base is much smaller but the server does run 24/7 barring acts of God & mechanical mischief.
Since everything you do in MP counts the same in SP and vice-versa, it's a good idea to just do your playing on MP. Sooner or later, someone will come along.
The most ever hosted was 16, the average is 4-8. Since Legends has players all over the world and in every time zone, I would hesitate to state a particular time.
Babylon 5 is a "no rules" server, but don't let that frighten you.
There is really only one pilot likely to attack noobs, but his entrance in the game is spotty at best. Other than the Romulan, most players are helpful and no-one will bother you if you prefer to be left on your own.
If you're lucky, the "server" may actually talk to you as well and answer questions, offer tips, etc.
Hope that helps...

I haven't played for a long time, but remember the download was ALOT smaller than that. What changed? I haven't had this installed for probably nearly a year now. Thanks

I see - not much different than it was for download size, then. I'm trying to remember, but it used to be even half of that, wasn't it? Amazing
