So I'm thinking of making a trip to Sol.
I just want to make sure its possible to fly from one of the southern sectors to Sol before i take off because.....well.....you know.... In space no one can hear you scream.

How far can you travel on inerta? Could you in theory just drift off in space forever? Has anyone tried?

its possible................
( better to do the quest for the short-cut though)

In theory all the way, I think tha_rami once worked out that it would take a week on inertia to get from sapphire to olympus though................

 The trouble with going all the way on inertia is how the navigation computer determines heading toward a waypoint ... it zig-zags. So, if you decide to use inertia, make a "waypoint check" every few hours (yes ... hours ... space is really, really big) and plan to alter your course (you can do it without disengaging inertia by using thrusters to center your "direction of flight" indicator) whenever you've zigged (or zagged) too far.
