I'm just realizing that's the way to go.
Right now I fly an Evoch-C for combat in war zones and keep a (civy) ship stored close by if I need to haul cargo or do some more mining.

I'm trying to figure out what the best ship for dog fighting would be.

If you like maneuverability, choose the Evoch-C. The Evoch is fast, tough, and incredibly maneuverable. Some pilots find it too twitchy, though, so figure out what you like. If you prefer resilience to maneuverability, the Predator may be the way to go.

Evoch-C anyday of the week, and twice on sundays!

The amount of beatings I take when out on a hunt would be a lot worse if it were not for the speed and "twitchy"ness of the old Evoch. I have still got an old Hunter frame for when I am on the scrounge for dumped cargo after a dog fight.

There are electronic flares. You get them free whenever you buy fuel. They top you off to maximum 99 cms. I have a joystick button mapped to them. They are very useful against missiles.

Read the strategy guide. It is chock full of wisdom and stuff.

 The default for countermeasures is the "c" key ... which is right above the space bar. Re-mapping one or the other is probably a good idea and, if I keep turing off inertial while attacking a capital ship (when I meant to puke out a string of flares), I just might (someday) do it (re-map one of the keys, that is).

:o 'Cause accidently slowing down while ten feet away from a capital ship that's full of all kinds of nasty missiles (aimed your way) is never a good idea.

The only counter measures that are available are flares against enemy missiles and the flares get replenisht for free with every refueling....;)

As far as civvy ships go i like the hunter frame. 8 hardpoints but still not slow or unwieldly like a leviathan.

for a civvy ship i run a talon with maxed out engines or wings, depending on my mood
i was told this would be less viable in EM, THEY LIED :O

Yes, I like to switch ships around as well depending on my goal for the session. These are the ones I use, Levy, Evoch-C, Avenger, Predator.....;)

Now I can't say how I'd do in the combat zone with a slower ship, but I like to stick with one final blueprint:Leviathan frame, Banshee cannon, Fusion laser, and an Excalibur pack at least stowed away in cargo. My cruising speed is only 750, but I can hit 3000 w/afterburners and still outrun missiles. I also have a Mantis jump drive, repair system 3, and a Stealth Generator--which always freaks enemy ships when I fire a salvo of Excals and then dissappear! Even with all that equipment I'm able to keep 900 output on shielding and a 1200 fuel tank that can take me to any destination without having to reconfigure my ship.

I'm not eligable for a Predator yet but after more experience I've come to prefer the Evoch-C over the Avenger for combat. When I want to do some money-making I build a Hunter with 5 cargo bays, class 2 wings and class 8 engine. I love the Hunter frame. You can have 5 cargo bays and still be quick and kick Vonari butt in a battle.
I don't bother with the Levi unless I'm going to enter a wormhole in a black hole.

I used to prefer the Evoch-C for a while but then I noticed that it is not always the best joice for everything there is to do in Evochron.....;):P:P:P:P:P

I find the Evoch-C too "twitchy" for me. For combat I fly the Avenger which is perfectly agile enough and has a little more armour than Evoch-C. For Civvy ships the Hunter is a well-balanced frame that combines manouevrability with weapons load-out, making it very versatile for different types of activities. For deep space exploration I fly the Levi with maxed out cargo and fuel tank of 4000 units for long trips when you don't know when you'll be able to refuel again.
