More n00b questions

Ok, so I'm starting to grok the combat and racking up some kills. So I decided to spread my wings and explore...

I jumped into Fauston, and I'm immediately attacked by Navy faction ships! What the heck did I do to annoy them? But some other ships come to my aid! I look at my rescuers, and they are Navy faction too! whats going on? A civil war? Why are Navy ships fighting each other?

Also, my docking fee is expensive, how do I raise my reputation in the system while being attacked by Navy? I am doing missions for everyone but the Rebels and Guild, but I worry that defending myself against the 'red' Navy ships, I am just pissing the Navy off and lowering my reputation!

Oh and is there anywhere I can read up of Evo lore? Who are the rebels? Who are the Guild? What are the different nations? Who are the Venari, and why does everyone enjoy beating them up?

The navy ships are mercenaries just like yourself who happen to be under contract for the Navy at that moment. Thus, it is possible for one Navy ship to consider you friendly while another considers you an enemy.

Also, my docking fee is expensive, how do I raise my reputation in the system while being attacked by Navy?

Avoid attacking red Navy ships. You may have to just deal with the problem and get yourself out of any situation where you might need to destroy red navy ships. Even if they attack you, you may have to show restraint and not attack back.
