Mining question

This seems like a weird balance issue to me, but I'm new.

As a new pilot, I can do dangerous combat missions for about 20-40K, or easier missions for less. However I can make about 500k in the same amount of time mining. Mining is so boring it makes me want to cry, but it seems the most sensible way to make money quickly.

Is there a reason for the massive discrepancy? Do the missions start paying out more once you have built up the trust of the faction you do the missions for?

Location, location, location. And yes, as your rep increases, so does your pay for your services. Consider contracts a long term investment strategy, mining is short term (boring to some) and does little for that rep. You will also eventually be able to speed up the contract process, even on par with 500K mining time intervals pretty early in the game.

And you can make more than mining by exploring and doing trade runs once you discover the secrets of lucrative trading...LOL...

The other night I did a 7 waypoint mission, in Pearl, got paid a straight 1m for it. Pearl is hostile to me again, whoopee!

Yep, there are also missions that will pay you a lot once you achieve the proper ranks...
