I've tried the demo of Legends, and I'm pretty impressed, though I never got a chance to try the combat.

Problem is, I have a rule that I never buy a game for more than $20. There are now so many great games out there for less than $20, and from time to time Steam usually has some crazy deals for the newer games. Last couple of games I bought full price I really regretted it.

Anyhoo, 'No problem!' I thought, I'll just wait a year or two until Legends drops in price, maybe when the next Evo game is out (age brings patience

But I check out the website to give Renegades a try, and even the older Evo games are still running for $25!

But I haven't played a decent space sim since I-War1+2. and Frontier before that. The Freelancers and X games left me cold. (Top speed of 100k/m in a vacuum? Seriously? The friggin' Apollo craft cruised at 12,000mph! In the 60's!)

So want do you (biased) people think? worth that extra $5?

I wouldn't be so indecisive if I wasn't so broke. Stupid economy.

Oh and why do people fight in MP? It's not like EVE where there are limited resources to control. I think the Evo universe seems more than big enough to accommodate a couple of dozen people. What is the prize which makes it worth losing ships?

Welcome Hendar23!

I was never into the space simulation genre so I took a pretty big risk buying into EL because I had no clue what to expect. I am very glad I did so, however. This game is an amazing space sim. I have tried one or two others and find the style of play in EL to far outmatch them. If you like a universe without walls and boxes that you can do whatever you want in, then you will like EL.

Oh and why do people fight in MP? It's not like EVE where there are limited resources to control. I think the Evo universe seems more than big enough to accommodate a couple of dozen people. What is the prize which makes it worth losing ships?

Combat in MP is a challenge that you will not find against any AI ships. We fight in mp because it is fun, pure and simple. There are no rewards or punishments per se other than bragging rights. For example, if you were to beat Eclipse in battle, you would probably be hailed as the best pilot to fly in Evochron. Ever.

Hello Hendar23, Welcome to the forum and the Sim. Most pilots that do fight in MP do so because they like to test themselves and their ships against others who are willing. Sometimes you get the renegades who fight to fight. Best of luck with your decision making. I don't know of any unhappy pilots who have bought the game. See you out there sometime.

Thanks for the replies. I'll probably give in to temptation and get the game soon enough.

Can't see myself doing many MP dogfights though. Fighting with nothing to win or lose seems really empty after EVE. But who knows? Maybe we could take bets to the value of our ships....hehehehe.

Any of you play any of the I-War games? Does the combat compare? I'm hoping the modTorn Stars gets finished sometime. I miss having distance to target showing millions of km

There were so many smart design ideas in I-War. Shame it never got the publicity of the Freespace and Freelancer sci0fantasy games

Even starting from the ISS, a trip to Mars would take about two years. In Legends, you can get from one planet to another a lot quicker than that ... assuming you use your jump drive. "Impulse" velocity is limited to a maximum of 4k, though ... the reason being (well, we can come up with some psuedo-scientific rationale, if you like).

Others would love to welcome you with open fire like Romulan and some Bad Aliens. Bad Aliens will warn you thou or engage you in conversation, Romulan however attacks and hunts down newplayers without warning and does not engage in conversation...hope to meet you in one piece thou....LOL...

Buy the game, it's well worth it. There's a helluva lot more to the game than PvP. I've been playing EL for, I think, over a year now, and still haven't accomplished everything that the game has to offer. Don't let age put you off, I'm 67 in a couple of months.

There are no material awards for winning in PvP. It's fun, and a test of your skills Vs another human pilots' skills, doesn't half get the adrenaline flowing. It's also used to increase your flying skills.

Strangely enough, there isn't a lot of PvP. When it does happen, you'll seldom just get attacked - there's only a couple of pilots do that, and, when they do, the rest jump in to chase them off, which then develops into a game of find the intruder, again good fun.

You can communicate, with other players in MP, via the keyboard, or, if you are both connected, through direct speech.

I would think, that for a similar game, and there isn't one, to El, in the commercial market, you would be asked to pay over Â£40 - note that is sterling, not dollars.

Anyway, welcome to the forum, and I hope that I see you in MP playing the game.

On the other hand, I too have played I-War, both 1 & 2.
Legends offers an excellent approach to newtonian physics in space flight and still allowing for remarkable ship movements.
I don't know where you got the idea that Legends is a "shoot-em-up" game. Let me assure you it is not.
It is an open universe, freestyle game. You can engage in combat, if you like, or avoid it altogether and indulge yourself in trade or exploration. You will not be required to fight anyone at anytime. The choice is yours.
As you progress thru the game, you will enter systems that are "hostile". You can decide if you wish to fight or flee.
However, Multiplayer does offer the opportunity for PvP play, but you will not be forced to fight other players. If you want to be left alone, so be it. If you want to "share" combat missions, you can do that too.
So don't think that this game pressures anyone into fighting PvP.
It's not even necessary to fight "AI" unless you want to, but you would be missing a lot of fun.
There is more mandatory combat in I-War, then there is in "Legends"!
But if & when you decide you are ready for combat, it is there and when you tire of destroying "AI" and want something more challenging, that too will be waiting for you.

lol. I guess I shall have to start taking inflation into account. I am trying to be strong ----! Since PC gaming seems to have almost completely gone over to digital downloading I have gone a bit nuts with the credit card. I don't even have to stop by a game store. Heck, the last time I actually had to insert an actual physical object into my computer to play a game it felt like I had stepped into the 19th century. I thought I may have to shovel more coal into the PCs burners. So I stuck to $20 for now. I had to draw the line somewhere! It's worked out well. there are ----loads of classic game out there now.

I don't know where I gave the impression that I thought Legends was a shoot-um-up. I just thought the I-War games were the nearest comparison in terms of flight modeling and combat dynamic. I'm watching Torn Stars, a mod for I-War, closly. They are turning I-War into a free-form, combat-is-optional, you-can-spend-all-day-mining, uber-game. If they ever release it.

Hi Hendar and welcome to the forum!

In many ways I agree with you about paying too much money for a game. These days corporate game-makers just seem to rip people off.

But not so with Evochron Legends!

For a start the size and depth of the game is so extraordinary you'll never get bored of it. I've been playing it for just over a year and I find it still as fun and engaging as when I first bought it. There are so many hidden things to explore. The pvp combat is very life-like and requires a great deal of skill. For me MP is the most fun aspect, not just pvp but also when you team up with another pilot or two and go exploring some new anomalie.

Also the developer (Vice) is constantly working to improve it with regular updates which you never have to pay extra for. And he always responds very quickly to any questions or problems that you might have with the game. I'm surprised that the price isn't more, with the amount of dedication he puts into the game! Plus the game community is a nice mix of funny, witty, yet mature players who can help you out a lot.

In short I can promise you, you won't be sorry if you buy it!;)

Renegades and Legends "a must" games for a space sim player. I suggest you should break your rule for Evochron games. Some games release with high prices as you said, Evochron games already released as 25(nice price), deserve every penny If you ask me...

Another thing(a bit outside of the scope), some people worry about new game release date. Some people say "I bought Renegades, Legends came into picture after 2 days" for example. Nothing to worry about imo. You were already late and yes, sometime difficult to find people in Mp but, you have nice game in your hand. I lived this a bit in Renegades days(cought it on the middle), but I bought Legends just in time and I saw its advantage. If you play sequels, you see advantage while playing new one

I like it.
