Help With Ship Frame

Post by TheCalebB »

Hi guys, as i am no good at 3D modeling, I was wondering if i post a picture of a space ship could someone possibly make a model based on it?

Possibly to replace the destroyers?

Cool design, did you draw it or get it from somewhere else?

It wouldn't be too terribly difficult to make, IMO. It might be something I could do if I can find some time.

Yeah, nice design. I'm not sure if you can override the default destoyer configuration though ... and it looks awfully big to be a fighter. (Maybe a Levvy ... but where would you put the cockpit?)

I think it is possible to overwrite the capital ships. I thought I saw someone do that in the mod forum.

Sure, you can substitute the capital ships, they're even broken down into several types, although there's only one Vonari ship...
It looks like it's already a 3d model, where did it come from? It might be easy to port.

Ok, I decided to throw something together. Definitely WIP, but hopefully you can see how it is progressing and also what level of "talent" I am working at :P

Image

Disclaimer: Still not sure if I will be able to finish the model. My schedule is very busy and right now I am in a I-have-no-life-whatsoever stage. Also, texturing is not my strong suite (as you can see if you look at any of the cockpits I have made) so if you want this to look good you may want to find someone good at 2D art. Finally, I am not sure how intellectual property works when someone makes a 3D model of a 2D drawing, but I would not feel comfortable releasing this until receiving some sort of blessing from the original designer, and I have no clue who the designer is or how to reach them.

EDIT:
Great, just posting this has made me ignore my much-needed studying and adjust the shape of the ship. It looked like the front of the ship needed elongating... :P

Help With Ship Frame

Thanks guys. With Spring Break next week, I might have time to bring this project to completion before I disappear off the radar again. I did some work in the last day or two to add the rest of the major structural components. I think the overall shape still needs tweaking, but the only thing left to add are the gun turrets. Pictures below.

Let me know what changes you think should be made to the shape of the ship.

Again, if someone has any talent texturing it would make the model look much better than my rudimentary skills will allow. I also haven't found a way to contact the original designer yet, but I also haven't really looked that hard, either.

-Accountant

EDIT:
Current polycount (quads and tris) is around 700. By the time I finish and before I optimize it I anticipate around 800-850 polygons total. What number should I be aiming for?

More pictures. Progress is slow because school has gotten very busy. I have finished the turrets and consider the model itself essentially complete. All that is really left is UV mapping and (maybe) creating a texture for it. I will likely release the non-custom textured model and then create a texture and release the ship with the custom texture at a later date (if I find time).

Thanks Vice :)

Note to everyone:
I have found out who the owner of the artwork is and e-mailed him a request to release the model I am creating. If he allows it, I will try to finish the model soon (looking at the webcomic the ship appears in, I discovered that I have not properly modeled pretty much the entire bottom of the ship) and release it. If he does not allow it, then I will cease development. Hopefully it is the former :)

Looks very cool, good job Accountant!
I imagined this model as a capital ship somehow since very first message of this topic. Your texture proves this...

I really hesitate saying this but I think the ship would truly be awesome if you shortened the forward "nacelles" by about a 1/3.
Would it be a lot of work to try it?
Their long length just doesn't look right, imho.

In the picture which is the original I believe it is longer. So it looks like Accountant already shortened the nacelles in his version of the model. It looks good to me in Length....Accountants version that is. I agree with you MMaggio that in the picture they are to long.....;)

I just got a response from Jim Francis who created the design of the ship for his comic-based space opera, Outsider (http://well-of-souls.com/outsider/). He gave me the green light to continue and even provided links to some pictures that will be useful in completing the model. One of the pictures was even a to-scale top-down view of the model. So some improvements in scale are coming ;)

@MM
Are you talking about the forward part of the engine, or the forward part of the arms coming off the main body?

I will post some pictures soon of the new scale and you can all give your input as to the scale of the model ;)

Those long forward "arms". I think it would look better if they were shortened.
