Gravity indicator

Post by skyline »

Hello to all.

Another old newcomer here, maybe not as old as some of you. Same story as many - played Elite back in the bbc b days through frontier, X series etc etc and now have, finally, gone full circle and found a "real" ;) fun and immersive space sim. Many thankyous to VICE, who is a genius, this game is brilliant.

Only question so far is - I *think* one of the readouts on the left hand panel in the cockpit (below set speed) shows gravity. This, for me, is always at zero - when i enter a planet's gravity field I assume that figure should ramp up a bit??? Maybe I am wrong. Have never seen any figure in here other than zero (in green)

Anyway, cheers.

Gravity indicator

Deactivate IDS while you are in a planet's gravity field and you will see that the number will increase.
I think this indicator only shows how much you get pulled/pushed by the gravity of a planet, star or station.

But if your Engines are activated (while flying in a planet's atmosphere) you don't get pulled down by the planet's gravity, because your engines are strong enough to keep your ship in the air. You resist the gravity (which means it doesn't affect you) and that's why the grav-level is zero. If your IDS is turned off, you will recognize that the gravity really starts to affect you and the number increases.

Damn, I hope you get what I wanted to say and if so, I hope I could help you :D
I don't really know how to express it with my limited vocabulary xD

Hi Skyline.
Welcome aboard.

Gravity indicator works well with stars and stations etc. But doesn't work with planets.

See you in mp I hope...

Actually it does, but only if your IDS is turned off. ;)

 Assuming it really works that way, it's a perfectly good explanation ... and helps a lot. I never could understand why a planet's gravity never seemed to register. Thanks.

Indeed, a fine explanation - Thanks for the replies. Had a go - it will still register a value for gravity with IDS on, as long as gravity is winning over thrust.

Another question - is it possible to reduce the sound volume of the tractor beam? I mine a fair bit and the sound soon puts me into an hypnotic trance, in which, i believe that I become platinum. I dont want to just turn the overall volume down, whilst mining, as i like to hear new radar contacts blipping up.

Hi warsign thanks for the welcome, will be giving MP a go when i find my way about a bit more.

Yep, Hi Skyline, Welcome to the game and forum. Hope to see you out there. About gravity indicator, watch it closely when entering the field of stars and black holes so that you get a sense of a save distance from the star or blackhole otherwise you might be pulled in and suddenly explode....;)

If you have a program to edit the original tractor beam sound, then you could reduce it's volume. ^^
But it seems like you have to record that sound, because I don't know where to get it elswhere. :-/

 Well, let's see ... I suppose you could modify the "countermeasures" sound so, whenever you fire off a flare, it has more of a "flushing" sound. Or, even better, change:
warn2.wav = critical warning alert
... 'cause, it's likely your ship will already be in the toilet when you hear it.
