HIDDEN PLANETS / STATIONS

Post by SHADOW STAR »

I've run across several star-like beacons for hidden planets / stations--(at least that's what I assume them to be) in systems that boast such a find. However, when I try to approach them, they simply dwindle down to nothing the closer I get. How do I approach them in such a way that I can find the hidden object in those systems?

Hello SHADOW STAR, welcome to the forum and the Sim. That seems strange. What is your location when this happens? :)

I've been in Deneb, Rucker, & Virgo among others--all systems that boast a hidden planet or station of some sort. So I thought these were some sort of beacon to lead me to the hidden objects. It usually appears some distance from the main portion of the system and appears like a nova star. However; it is only visible from a specific angle of approach. If you deviate very far from your approach, it disappears. If you get close enough, though, it eventually dissipates altogether.

If you can save the exact cordinates you are at when this starts and stops I will try to duplicate it. Good flying to you.:)

That is weird. What color are those star shaped beacons ? Do they emit light or signals ? Do they only appear on your radar or do you have actual visual ?

Ah, I remember seeing something like this in Renegades. I thought that it was to give a light source to create shadows, even when you are far away from a real star (or something like that) but I was unsure.

Basically, when one is far away from a main system and points his craft at a heading of 0 and attitude 0 (iirc), it appears as though one is looking straight at a star. Upon turning away (even the slightest!) the star disappears, until the craft turns back to that heading.

Am I accurately describing what you saw? It might be useful for you to note what heading the star appears at, as you may find it always shows up when you are looking in a particular direction (and the above conditions are also met).

I hope this helps.

Yes, that is exactly like what I saw. I am not certain about my heading at the time, but everything else pans out just like you said. You mean those are not beacons of some sort to alert you to a hidden planet? I was approaching them on purpose to try to find them. If that is not what they are I am relieved and will leave them be. They don't seem to lead anywhere anyway.

It's been awhile since I've played Renegades, but I'm almost positive that they are not. When I first saw them I was in deep space and thought (perhaps) that they were distant (extant) stars that one could find by traveling towards them. This turned out to not be the case, though.

Vice might have more to say about this. Glad I could help.

Hmm,

Sounds like it could be some unknown natural or artificially-made phenomena! Rare time-space continuum fluctuations? Or perhaps residual traces of an ancient, super-advanced, alien technology? Outer space equivalent to the Marie Celeste? May be something for the clan Universe Explorers to follow up!

I think these are the system stars which can be quite a distance away and taking the physics of light bending around massive objects in to consideration trying to navigate to the source can lead to nowhere. At certain angles of aproach the Star could fade away or be hidden by other objects surrounding the star. In unobstructed space stars can be quite bright as compared to seeing them from a planet through an atmosphere. Vice as done an excelent job of implementing physics as acurately as possible for a game like this. And if I remmember correctly most stars of systems are at coordinates 0,0,0. ;)

I've experienced something similar, mostly in Renegades. I've seen a planet, and a station, faintly through star mist, or a planet haze, and thought that I had found a hidden planet. It was just like a mirage, a distant object being caught up in whatever.

If you are experiencing something like that, a quick look at your nav map will show that you've taken a heading towards an existing planet/station.

agreed, it would be an interesting sight, bta it's unlikely for me as i spend too much time in orbit around stars (you get the thrust just right and you can sit with gravity just high enough to crush anything that attacks you.... almost as safe as a station, and the fuel is cheaper)

Have you accidently hit the "M" key or the space bar? ck to make sure the inertial system is off

 What MM said. Check your cockpit display ... if you see something on the left side that says "Inertial" then you need to press the Space Bar to cut your speed. Either that or ram somebody ... or something.

;) With inertial off, the only way you'll keep on going is if you've gotten too close to a star, planet or black hole.
