Humble Request: Click & Drag mouse controls

Post by Goatnado386 »

Hey, I was wondering if you would consider a future addition to the current control schemes. I'd like to see something along the lines of a Frontier control scheme where you have a mouse pointer that the ship does NOT follow. The player clicks and holds the right mouse button, whereas the pointer disappears and the ship then controls as if it is direct mouse control. Main guns are fired simply by pressing the left mouse button while already holding the right for steering. When the right mouse button is released, the pointer returns and the left mouse button no longer fires guns, but instead simply interacts with objects on the HUD.

Any chance of this being added at some point in the future? Thanks!! :cool:

Might be feasible as an entirely separate control mode, although for a mouse flight control it might be kind of limited by having to click and hold a mouse button for access to flight control. Also, how would you see missile control being handled by such a mode?

Yes, exactly. It would have to be something that you would be agreeable (and kind enough) to implementing as an additional control scheme since people are so opinionated about their personal control preferences.

This is a common flight control scheme that was invented by Elite 2: Frontier but has also been used by First Encounters, Freelancer, X3R, and X3TC (the last three use a slightly modified version). Missile launching using this control scheme has traditionally been a keystroke but I figure with today's pointing devices, a player might also want to map it to one of their many gaming mouse buttons. I personally have more buttons than I need on my Razer Lachesis.

I would think that holding the alt key while in 'mouse flight' mode to interact with console screens to be just as easy, and already there. I believe the right mouse button is already assigned to a function in mouse flight mode.
Hey, actually, this might be the answer. Vice, would it be easier to accomplish my request if you were to simply make an option to where the ALT button (remappable) functionality is inverted; enabling mouse directional flight controls when this ALT button (or remappable keystroke/mouse button) is being held down? When the key or button isn't being held down, it's simply the pointer allowing the player to interact with the HUD. Yeah! That would probably be much easier. Good work, Eclipse!:cool:

It would probably be about the same in terms of coding difficulty and the separate control mode might be the better way to go. Seems to be a pretty limiting control mode to constantly have to hold down a mouse button to control your ship (and give up missile control on the mouse for most 'mice'), but if there's some interest for it, I can probably set some time aside to try and implement such a control scheme.

Well, if no one else has any interest in the old school control method, I can't expect it to be implemented, of course. I know a lot of the peeps here use the joystick anyway. I'll start fiddling with holding the ALT key down. That might be all I need, anyway.

<shameless plug>
Can we get some point-and-click operated capital ships or large trade/mining vessels? Stuff that isn't designed to dogfight, but has turrets or missiles for defense? :D
