A Good ship design for Combat is the one you feel most comfortable Flying....I personally prefer the Evoch military ship, a very Fast and Agile ship. When I flew the civilian ships I liked the Hunter. Give 'em a try and in time you will find the one that is most Comfortable to you, as your fighting skill progresses you may change ships to match your skill level.

It all also depends on your experience. Once you gain enough experience you can even survive and take on the most difficult missions/contracts in a Talon.;)

This brings up another thing I've been wondering about. I assume that 99% of the people playing online are using military ships? Is that correct? I haven't ventured into miltary service just yet and I've expected that until I do I ought to just stay away from Multi-player for that reason.

Yes. You are correct. but that is no reason to stay away from Multiplayer. In fact if you join multiplayer in Warzones when a lot of players are on in a particular sector you probably will get a lot of help and protection of the online players against Romulan and Vonari and maybe some other aliens. In multiplayer your most vunerable if you mind your own bussiness as a new player. And in the Warzones you can learn a lot from other players and contracts/missions you get credit for just watching the others complete contracts as a group you get your rank up much faster to be able to get the military ship you want.;)

I think it's nowhere near 99% using military ships. Actually, I doubt it's even half. There are many dis-advantages to military craft and I might remind you, it's not the ship, it's the pilot that makes the difference.

A good Civilian can handle most Reds and complete most missions. The main drawback would be going up against a fellow player who is experienced and has a Top of the line Military ship. ;):P

Civilian ships are Great for making mega credits....military ships are not. Civilian ships are good in combat too...like MMaggio says: "It's not the ship, it's the pilot that makes the difference." With practice you can become a Good pilot no matter what ship you fly....;)

I would recommend sticking with civilian ships until you have more credits. You can't make good money flying a military ship. There's just no room for cargo. Also, there is no room for crew, so if you're treasure-hunting, you won't be able to take a navigator with you.

The other drawback to military ships is that they are limited to rank, so the first ship you get, a ferret, might not be worth it. You can do a lot of military missions using a Phoenix (my personal favorite civilian ship) and thus work your rank up to a Wraith (at least). The Wraith is a good military ship because it has 8 hardpoints. It's slightly less armored and less agile than the Evoch, but it has a lower rank buy-in.

I concur with the statements above about multiplayer. If you go to a warzone, you will have help and are probably more likely to survive because you will have help. There is some money to be made doing contracts this way, also. It might even be easier if you do it this way, if you are a social loafer :-P

Outside of the warzones, though, you might find Vice or someone else who can show you good trading locations, or hidden systems, or the like, so MP is worth checking out, and I'm mainly a SP player, so that's high praise coming from me I assure you.

However, you'll want more money. When you get to a point where you can afford any frame you want with any modifications, then the decision to use a military craft or civilian craft will be up to you, and you can select the craft based on your goals. The best way to build up enough money to do this is to find hidden treasure or mine, and trade the stuff at the best trading location.

Platinum always seems to bring a higher price than any other mined material, regardless of where you are, so if you mine plat, and you know where to get a good price for it, you'll soon have plenty of money to throw around.

Sorry for the digression

I'm sticking to a Leviathan frame since some time now and built with an eye to agility with the use of wings system and engine I ended up with a really sturdy craft that is still capable of turning.

I can engage vonari in dogfight without problems, just to give a parameter.

I maximized cargo, shields, engine and got what I could with the remained assembly points in fuel (1600) and wing system (can't remember what).
Best regards

Hello good people, I tried the Demo and bought the Key, as I do like a good Space/Trade Sim.

Noticed this thread and thought my first post may as well here as anywhere else, as I have been pondering Ship Build. I would prefer to go the trader/Miner route over Combat, so It looks clear that the Civ shiplines are the best route.

If I have read this thread right, then the Civ ships of the line ALL have Cargo bays yes? and that one would hope to climb up the line to Leviathan as this would be the best ship for purpose AND survival?

Just curious :) I know I have a very long ways to go up that ladder, having only bought the second Civ ship of the line as of yet and have the 5 capacity cargo bay attached, ready for some mining and profits. Have enlarged fuel capacity a little also for now, only being in game a few hours (most the afternon) and made plenty of mistakes, but hey that's how we learn right? :)

I have my tractor beam and can now do some crate colecting too, hehe, spent 20 minutes first time chasing acrate before I found out I need a tractor to complete the mission. (it just kept moving away from me) @.@

Now I have a better grip I feel a little more competent, and may even go Multi during the week once I stop running into things and generally making a Doh!boy of myself O.o :)

DennyMala: I maximized cargo, shields, engine and got what I could with the remained assembly points in fuel (1600) and wing system (can't remember what).

This is the way I figured to go, so was good to see that posted as it made me feel that I was thinking on right lines. :)

I guess the only question would be, as a Trader/Miner whatever, would I survive without costly (pointswise)weapons upgrades, or is there enough points to go round to have a sting when needed?

Thanks

As for being the best suited, that again is up to the pilot. I, like Eclipse, prefer the Phoenix and am not nearly as good a pilot. In hairy situations, remember to keep an eye on your Energy/Shield setting. I tend to fly with +5e/-5s although I don't recommend anyone else even attempt ;)

Turn your IDS off and fly in inertial mode. There is no need to waste fuel when going from point a to point b... not to mention, you can attend other needs while waiting for your drift to finish.

If you're staying away from multiplayer because everyone flies a military craft, I can assure you that I switch between the two on a regular basis. I don't like being pinned into a War Zone :)

Edit: I remember in renegades learning the hard way to adjust my course before jumping in to clean a solar panel :)

Hehe, I learned how hard Asteroids are too. Wont forget in a hurry to get clear before Autopilot and accidently hitting F2 instead of coasting on '2' around a couple close roids O.o

Also learned to wait on the all clear when leaving atmosphere. Was not pleasant being vapourised because I was eager to get to my WP and had forgot to save after my first tradeing on a planet.

But again, its good knocks that cement memory :)

So far enjoying the game. Not sure just how much depth there is as I have just been Doing Roid kill missions and mining after the payoff while there. Paid for my 2nd tier ship and some gear upgrades so far.

Is there crafting? Thought I saw mention somewhere, and if so is it a cheaper or more economical way to upgrade ship parts? Not traveled further than the first Roid area as yet, so not sure whats out there as yet, just prepping my ship so far.
