Newbie with a Question

Post by Sajanus »

Bought the game yesterday and am currently just pottering around trying to see how it all works.
I finished the training but don't remember being given any details with how to start the storyline, is it logged somewhere I can go back to or can someone point me in the right direction please.

Oooh another question, is there a breakdown anywhere of what weapons are good for what task and why some are better than others etc?

Thanks

............Rikk

Hi Sajanus, welcome to EL. Hmmm. the storyline, well, there really isn't one. It's a freeform game, you do you own thing. You can explore, mine, trade, fight, turn pirate - you can do civilian missions, or military missions, or both - it's all up to you.

First thing to do is get yourself a mining/tractor beam, and them start mining the asteroids for minerals, the top prices to go platinum, and, in Saphire, you get the best prices at Rivoch station.

As you make more money you can upgrade your ship frame, and buy better, more effective weapons. You can also take on a ship crew, maximum number 4. The crew help you in various ways, from navigation, to repairing your ship, to making your weapons more efficient. Mind, you have to train your crew up and increase their loyalty to 100 per cent. If a member of crews' loyalty is less than 100 per cent there is a chance that they may leave you when you visit a station. The work that you do, and the missions that you successfully complete increase crews loyalty, and efficiency.

Have fun. If you go into MP, you'll find that almost anyone, aside from the Romulan, will help you out. Warning: the Romulan likes to attack, and destroy newbies.

Thats what I was after :)

Cheers for the pointer I'll dive down and have a look later, thanks also for the other pointers guys I'm enjoying the game but it is a little suck it and see which is both fun and a pain working stuff out as you go.

Aha, another Q, is there anything I can go and shoot that's not to hard or won't destroy my credibility for a little practice.

Head on down to Thuban for some quick Hostile action and if you can afford it buy the license at the 1st station you see when you enter the system....Thuban is Always Hostile until you change it in SP mode...when in MP it stays the same...Hostile. Great place to wet your whistle for Combat training ;)

Thanks for the combat heads up, I'll go take a peek later :)

Got another Q ;)

When jumping to an asteroid field, mr science tells me there is a container at heading 56 pitch 6, does this mean compass on 56, ladder on +6?

Thanks

Ladder= pitch indicator, Heading = Compass....Yes, Follow that heading and pitch to containers that will show up as a purple blip on your radar....the purple blip will show up when you are less then 10000 away from it. Use your tractor beam on the containers to fill your cargo hold with Goodies...Enjoy ;)

To Conserve fuel....turn IDS off when you are headed in the right directions making sure you are at top speed then also shut your engines off. When the blip appears turn Ids back on and adjust your heading to the purple blip.

Just like to say thanks and it's a pleasure to find a forum for a game that is understanding of newbies. Always feel a little reticent about posting newbie Q's as more often than not you end up getting a good slagging off.

Your Welcome Sajanus :) There are a lot of Great pilots here willing to help new pilots and if you go online in MP you will meet them and please ask questions. Babylon 5 is the most popular but it is also a no rules server, so beware of the Romulan pilot and a few others that shoot at everybody....The [SW]Server has a Safe zone in the Sapphire system that allows new pilots a chance to get familiar with the Game without someone attacking them....Enjoy your Flying ;)

have to agree, plenty of good people around here.... everyone started out as a newbie at one point, so nothing wrong with asking questions (cause not everyone has the time to scroll through the old posts to find the answers.... would rather be out flying around ;))..... just remember, the worst that will happen is you blow up and respawn from your last save point....

mining tip from one newbie to another: when you have your nose up against an asteroid, and you go to open your cargo bay menu, don't hit the warp key by mistake :P

Currently here and OMG, it's mayhem everyone wants to kill me. Is there anywhere a little less NUTS where perhaps I can pick a fight or two and not have the whole world wanting a piece of me.

Olympus is a tad friendlier, still plenty of hostiles, but no so many. It's probably the best place to start practicing your combat skills, imho! :)

Yup....Olympus is also another good place to practice your fighting skills....Joining up with others in MP online will give you some very valuable experience as you do Co-Op missions or contracts together or even Practice combat with another player doing PvP action. I have seen a lot of pilots start at the beginning as novice pilots and Quickly rose to ACE status in no time ;)

Having a play around in olympus now and having a little success, was better once I worked out you need to get CLOSE :)

Little problem though, I get a contract to kill 4 fighters....jump to wp....wooop woop inbound missles, 2 salvo's later and I'm very dead.
Doesn't seem to matter what i do on getting to the wp I'm stomped in a serious way.
Any pointers?

Jump to way point on Inertial and Horizontal straffe set to full left or right. then missiles can hardly lock on to you. You can use CMs and your guns to get rid of any missiles that do lock on to you. And practice makes perfect;)

 You can also adjust your jump point without losing the contract waypoint. I usually set mine halfway between the center of the "X" and the very edge.

If you have a mission to drop off cargo to a waiting ship is there a way to drop just the cargo they require rather than everything in the bays?

Can you get a ship later that has the four crew spots and one free for a passenger?

Yes Sajanus, you simply don't carry any other cargo except the mission cargo.
That's the only way.
