Rep system

Post by WingC3 »

Overall, I love the rep system in EL. I like how your actions in one part of the universe don't attract much attention on the other side of the universe. I also like the idea of overall rep levels and the idea that you need to be reliable.

One thing, however, seems a bit off: To raise your rep, you spend a while beating the crap out of guild and rebels. Then, the level changes and everything resets. You go back to being neutral with them. That doesn't seem realistic. I can see why all the good guys reset to new levels of liking you. But the rebels get more and more hostile while you're killing them and then suddenly get friendlier....Shouldn't they still hate you?

Also, when the reset occurs, you go back to encountering the occasional red navy ship again. Often, the other green navy ships will kill the red one. That leads to faction members killing other members of their own faction just because of their rep with you.

Could someone maybe explain the rationale of this to me? Or is this perhaps something for a bit of refinement in upcoming updates?

I think when you kill enough rebels and guild clans you bassically eliminated the bad clans and guilds that are against the system they are a faction of so once you have eliminated the corrupt and bad guild and rebel clans
you have a neutral rep with the reputable guilds and clan of that system.

The red navy is only red to you because of a conflict you might have had with certain navy ships like firing accidently on them or mistakenly took them for rebel or guild in the heat of combat while they where still hostile to you when rep was hostile! And only when your reputation is good you won't see red navy! I think!

But Vice can better explain it;)

I noticed the percentages jump dramatically if you leave a system and come back (even if it's only a matter of minutes)..... I was mining in the Rucker system, and popping over to Pearl to take advantage of the better prices. While I was mining, my rep % in Rucker for Energy/Navy/Miners were all over 80% (with Navy being 91%). Took the gate to Pearl, jumped to the station, sold my haul, jumped back to the gate and was back in Rucker within 90 seconds; but my Energy and Navy % had changed to under 60%

haven't done much info digging on the rep system, but is it possible to change a system from hostile to moderate/fair/etc and have it stick that way?

It will, but not online, you must save, and you must remain long enough to retain the loyalty of the faction to earn the transition. Details on how it works is available in the guide here: http://starfighter.home.att.net/evochro ... de.htm#220 (let the images load, then click on refresh to center).

I feel like I've had some glitches in this process though. For example: I worked Onyx rep all the way up to good. After a trip to riftspace and back, the rep had fallen all the way back to moderate. In Pearl, I worked my rep all the way up to fair, but when I jumped to the main station in pearl orbit, it was hostile again. When I returned to where I had just been, it was hostile too. All my work evaporated in about 30 seconds, and reloading from save didn't help. ( I did not leave pearl... it was a random reset)

The only place I've had any luck with stability is Thuban which I've brought up to fair.

So questions:

Does long absence from a system after achieving an overall increase in rep (moderate->good for example) cause the rep to return to its original state? Does it return instantly or slowly over time? Or are the general rep increases permanent as the guide implies?

If they do fall slowly over time, is it necessary to do contracts in each system to maintain them or simply visit the system from time to time?

Do rep increases in large systems like pearl not cover the whole system? (or was what happened to me a glitch?)

Could be a number of factors, I'd be interested in reviewing your profile for possible causes. You do not need to constantly revisit them to maintain a level. Just be sure to save before doing much travel or being destroyed. Rep increases effect an entire reputation 'block' that generally covers the entire system.
